2018 FIFA World Cup Thread [W:87]

Poor Jesse can't purchase a goal......48 teams, more games, more money, more bribes....

Belgium has Hazard and De Bruyne... no one else is World Class.

Their central defenders are in their prime but injuries are a serious problem. The wing defenders are average if that which is why they often play 3 at the back.

Midfield.. average at best if you look past De Bruyne and Eden.

Attack wise has two supposed world class forwards.... they are more hype than reality.

We shall see...this is probably Belgium 's last chance of doing anything with the current golden generation.

*cough* You were saying?

It aint.. Panama is the weakest team in the WC.. last place (just before the US) barely in the CONCACAF....They should have beaten them by more...

Saudi Arabia look worse.

Do think it's a bad thing for the WC or good for allowing for more cinderella possibilities?
When was the last time the world cup had a cinderella??

It happens in the Euro (a lot), it has never happened in the WC.
Too many continental teams to beat.

To answer your question, no I dont think it will produce a cinderella, it will just dilute the quality of the matches

Sure, but looking at what areas get what extra teams and well. Take Asia. It gets 8 teams, versus 4.5 now. Australia moved to that confederation to get a better chance of qualifying because they always had to meet a South American team in the qualifiers. So the Asian confederation added a nation that would always compete for a place.

Now they will have 8 spots. Australia, South Korea, and Japan are basically automatic qualifiers. That leaves 5 spots, not 1.5 left for the rest.. Iran and Saudi Arabia have traditionally got strong teams, with Iraq coming up now.. problem is that still leaves 2 spots who are filled by countries like Hong Kong, China, Qatar, Timor-Leste and so on.. hardly world beaters. I suspect that this change was made to make sure that China got a spot...

Also look at CONCACAF... Mexico is the only team that usually makes along with the US.. that leaves 1 spot for central and north America. Pretty fair considering the quality. With the new set up, CONCACAF gets 6 spots... which guarantees the US of course (they would really have to fall down badly to miss out), but also gets very weak teams into the games. North America and Central America is Mexico and US, with the rest being below average.... Ironically it might mean that Cuba might get a chance now hehe..

The World Cup reminds me of what ******s soccer players are. The flopping and acting like getting tripped hurts as bad as having your leg ripped off. Jesus christ, act like a man. Why the refs and FIFA and all the leagues continually allow players to flop and writhe around like they got stabbed for the slightest of touches. Have some pride. I understand wanting to slow the game down, staying down to get a rest for the team, but jesus christ they act like children.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm a world cup follower but not much the other three years. My boss however... he's physically been to the last 7 world cups. He takes a month off and just goes. This is the first one he hasn't been to since that streak. I usually try to pilfer knowledge from him about what's what in Fu'tbol.

You really dont want to get into a debate about how American football players are doped up ******s that take breaks every 2 minutes because they are exhausted and need air... do you? :)

Plus they need pads, helmets and protectors so they dont get their prescious, fragile bodies injured :D

England are lucky... because they have been poor. I feel for Tunisia, they deserved a point.

Ah, but we have no expectations. We spent the last two decades (including the so-called Golden Generation) "going to win the World Cup" and then crashing and burning. We have a young team and no expectation.

And at least we didn't have Roy Hodgson put Harry Kane out kicking corners for us.

For the best two rugby tackles, yeah I'll agree there. How the VAR missed that twice is just ridiculous - but then, it's probably built in Russia and designed to ignore crimes against Englishmen or on English soil.

Heh!!! Love that last part!!!

I hope you English go far, mate!!! :peace

Greetings from the Dutch!!!

England weren't poor. They missed a lot of chances, but they made a lot too. They dominated possession, Pickford had hardly anything to do since Tunisia had just one shot on target all night, that's down to good defending. The ref was incompetent. I can see why he gave the penalty against England; it was harsh but fair. What I can't see is how he and his 9 FIFA officials missed two glaring rugby tackles on Kane, so much for the new crackdown on manhandling. I can't see England beating Belgium, who I think put in the outstanding performance of the first round, but English fans should be very satisfied with tonight's result. There's work to be done, but lots of cause for optimism.

Kane was mugged on two corners, at least. It would be better to have consistency if they are going to use VAR.
