10/15/19 debate thread

Yiykes. I do agree with Buttigieg about depoliticizing the SC.

I missed his suggestion how that would happen, but it would require a constitutional amendment-for starters

So, who is the most inspiring candidate? Charisma wins elections.

Sanders is. But he's a socialist and can be cranky. Warren is good. But she's too far left too. No one else really stands out to me in the charisma department.

She was a year behind me in college. I don't recall ever having much interaction with her. I was very active in the political union. I don't recall her being part of that at all, though she was involved in some feminist political group. My college GF was in her class-doesn't recall much of anything about her but a couple people I know were in the same residential college (dorm) as her and said she was smart and well spoken. They seem surprised she got into politics, but then again, I never saw classmate Shannon O'Brien (lost to Romney for Mass. Governor) was going to be political-but then she married into a family that was and the rest they say is history
I wasn't aware of her education. Thanks. Apparently she went on to UC Law. She's obviously a sharp & hard-working lady.

Winner: Tulsi (the only candidate of character, decency and charisma)

Runner-up: Bernie (the only other candidate of character and decency)

Novelty award: Yang

Losers: The rogues gallery of criminals and liars accompanying the above three

Tulsi has no chance. She is running in order to gain visibility, for a future more consequential run. In the future, maybe some day I'll vote for her. Not now.
Bernie is NOT a person of character and decency. He is a phony opportunist, and a narcissistic. He is a vacuous populist with impractical ideas. The sooner the loser known as Bernie Sanders drops off (and believe me, that loser will lose again), the better.

Everyone should pay attention to polling numbers and what the candidates say, and remember that come primary voting time. I remember 2008, where hillary was a sure win and no one thought this nobody senator could win, hillary had the polls backing her early on, obama was a nobody, come the end of the 2008 primary obama was the democrat candidate, so try not to look into early polls too much, outside democrat harcore voters, that vast majority who make a difference do not pay attention or give a crap this early in the game, and will likely not care until a few weeks before the first vote, this is when you will see all early polls did not mean crap and may even get to see someone no one thought could win pull ahead.

It's just a question. Can you afford to get really sick?

i think most Trump voters can't withstand a serious illness in their family. most are two income families and a really serious illness (that lingers) will bankrupt them.

Sanders, the most inspiring candidate? Charisma, Sanders?

That was a really good joke. Do you have other good ones to tell?

I like him too. Not enough to vote for him, but I like him.
My feelings, exactly. He's just beaten my expectations for him, which admittedly were pretty low.

Most Trump supporters couldn't withstand a flat tire.

Gabbard supported trump on syria policy, opposed him on iran policy, opposed trump on gun policy, but backed trump when it came to impeachment hearings, and opposed the democrats logic on impeachment. She also backed many liberal positions on healthcare but has been further away from democrats on immigration policy. You can basically sum her up as not really part of any parties rank and file, she is her own thing, and much like republicans and 2016 hated trump for besting bush, I think democrats hate her for besting harris and possibly making the other candidates look like fools.

So you pretty much define "conservativism" as anything that is not in lock step with the DNC? Was it "conservative" when she stepped down from the DNC over the treatment of Sanders in 2016 to support him?

Are you trying, in your charming and preteen bitchy way, to say you disagree with me?

That's not what the debates have been this year. They've actually been massive exchanges of lots of ideas more than probably most people expected them to be. In the recent past, American politics has become far too two-sided and zero sum than it was ever intended to be or that it can even effectively sustain. We don't need a winner and a loser every 20 minutes. We need a sustained conversation that welcomes all input and allows thoughtful solutions to complicated problems to evolve.
"Massive exchange of ideas". Seems like they mostly sung the "Me, too only better" chorus. Remember all the hands in the for the "healthcare for illegal aliens" question? I don't remember and dramatic conflicts or disagreements.

Tell us about a relationship that would surprise us and how it has changed your thought process:

Castro: I like old people and teachers.

WTF kind of dodge was that? Horrible answer.

I like him. He lives in a poor neighborhood. That's not a platitude. All these other politicians get rich and move to some gated community where they become totally disconnected from the reality ordinary people experience.

But he's not doing well here. He's not proposing anything.

That. I'm not saying he's inauthentic. It's just that whenever I've listened to him in these debates he is for me "Platitude Central". He doesn't propose anything but the vaguest stuff. It's just "THIS IS BAD!"

And it might be bad, but merely saying it doesn't do anything more. (Which is also why I didn't need them to spend so much time on why Trump sucks. We know it. Anyone listening understands that Trump sucks....they're just trying to find out what the hell you would-be presidents have to say)

yep, smart and she's not too far left. But she has some issues. She has a reputation of treating her staff like crap. She has zero charisma

And yet, over 60 former staff signed an open letter praising Klobuchar and stating that she was a caring “mentor and friend” to them.

Meh. Oh, well. Reality is that they didn't even formalize their policy proposals until the debates started. They were reacting and adapting to each other. They were watching voters respond to themselves and each other. The process has been dynamic and inclusive, althought it has huge deficiencies. I probably like a **** fight as much as you do, but I'm more cerebral in my politics than the Sweet 16.

He might get a VP nod, though. I could see a Warren-Buttigieg ticket.

Either way, his voice should be included in the new administration. When I see Buttigieg, I believe I'm seeing the future of the Dem Party and our great nation.

He's young and IMO, already over achieved to date. I see a bright future for Mayor Pete in politics in general, and in POTUS elections for many cycles to come. Most, if not all of the old timers, are most likely taking their last best shot at POTUS.

Yeah, I just found that out.

Derp.
Yeah, it's basically just a regular piece of legislation. No biggie in terms of legislative procedure, despite its absolutely huge impact. Despite our depiction of "three co-equal branches", Article 3 was basically the framers' red-haired green-eyed freckle-faced step-child!grammar
