‘Pure business’ at Biden-Putin summit: No hugs, no brickbats

Well, the President sure had some tough talk before the summit didn't he?

Told the troops in England, "I'll tell Putin, what I want Putin to know"... oooooh scary....

Instead Biden emerges from the meeting giving Puting the first presser, ceeding the upper hand in what happened in there.

Asked Putin pretty please don't cyberattack these 16 areas....Ok sure...

Officially dropped sanctions on Nord Stream2, while killing our energy sector...

Got NOTHING on the dissedent he's holding.

I'd call that less than nothing....

As opposed to all of the tough talk that liberals do about Russia....Liberals should be like "What the hell?...."

I appreciate the detailed reply, but I respectfully believe your expectations are too high, including taking the pre-talk bluster too seriously. Remember, the previous President got zilch, too. And he really kissed Putin's ass on that stage!

So the great summit was a hugh nothing burger...At one point Biden said he gave Putin a list of things that he wanted "off limits" for cyberattack...Are you kidding me? Does that mean that they can attack anything else?

What a weak showing...

This is exactly what firm diplomacy looks like.

Putin did not have a good day.

He made no concessions. But he quickly found himself alone, and in no position to make demands.

The Biden Administration used the G-7 meeting to reaffirm our relations with our allies. They followed up with a NATO meeting, again affirming the commitment to the Western Alliance, which Trump had tried to betray.

Biden walked in carrying a big stick. He had lined up his team, the US has the economic upper hand,

He chose to speak softly but firmly.

The American objective was to set the tone, a tone radically different from the obsequious fawning of the firmer guy.

Putin can’t make European countries nervous by sucessfully promoting political division and paralysis in the United States. He still has a rising China sitting along 1100 miles of his border.

The Trump circus is over. And the only person in Geneva or at the G-7 who wasn’t happy about that fact was Vladimir Putin.

I doubt that any of the Trump crowd has anything to say about this, other than sour grapes.

And media all over the world has drawn the sharp contrast between Biden’s smooth, informed and professional performance and the buffoonery and stupidity (as well as the open hostility and disloyalty) of Trump.

The fact that you see it that way only shows the partisan nature of your analysis.

hang on.

the murdering strong man didn't roll over??

Good talk as far as I am concerned...(Not a deranged madman like Trump)

I do (maybe he did) would have liked him to push a little more about the role of Russia in the economic fight against China

Oh? Red lines? What Red lines? What will be the punishment if crossed? Another "Hey, stop that?"
I wouldn't try it to find out, honestly.

There's only two possibilities, I see:

1] Trump supporters just operate on a totally different values & perceptions plane, than the rest of us?

or,

They are just throwing-out worthless nonsense in an attempt to get some cheap shots in!

You tell me . . .

It's a good start I suppose, although I am uncomfortable with any bilateral nuclear arms agreement that does not include China at this point. Ambassadors talking is a good thing of course. I am certainly disappointed by the lack of progress w.r.t. cyber-attacks; I was hoping for something akin to a bilateral agency to police criminals using the Internet to commit fraud, attack infrastructure etc. which is something both nations have an interest in achieving. I never would have expected someone like Trump to have the aptitude to achieve such an agreement, of course, but I do expect more from Biden.

All in all it seems like it was a good trip overall.

As to the OP, I think his opinions can be safely disregarded since, as we all can tell, he actually has no specific ideas of what he was expecting or would do himself; just a bunch of vague platitudes and low-grade tantrums.

I'm glad ambassadors will return and that a red line has been drawn on cyber attacks. Nuclear treaties are always a good thing.

Of course Putin isn't going to admit he had anything to do with the cyber attacks. Are people crazy? But he's not deaf, either. Hopefully, President Biden had a little something in there to make Russia think twice about pulling it again.
Red lines on Cyber have not yet been agreed to as of yet.
Just one of many issues even the Russians know they have to work on. What comes of it? Who knows, but I expect side bar discussions between the US/Russia on this and other issues will be in the mill.

It could be both, my friend...

And the conservatives have a vasrly differnt oppinion

Iden is a complete fool. Putin owns him.

How can a several hours try, be a 'waste of time'?

We had a former President spend weeks with NK's Kim, to no avail!
Not for trump it was even better than Epsteins island.

U limited young woman and boys.

Unlike with putin he got to be a top...

Your idea of a bilateral commission sounds promising--perhaps even more than just the two of us?

Biden will break out the pool chain.

Perhaps. I think it could be executable if clear boundaries were drawn e.g. investigating cybercrime can be a great area of collaboration until it exposes uncomfortable intelligence apparatuses that the two countries would prefer to keep quiet. However the U.S. and Russia do have a track record of figuring out ways to collaborate on potentially sensitive efforts while keeping military and national security entanglements at arms length and I'd like to think it's possible here.

Trafficking, drugs, fraud, hacks and cyber-ransoming... all areas where the two nations can partner together for some wins.... and wins create engagement and trust. Admittedly something specifically along these lines is what I was hoping to see come out of this "summit" but perhaps it'll come down the road.

As for other parties, perhaps but "baby steps first" is my gut reaction.
