Can we now dispense with the bullshit that this change in Texas voting law was easy to comply with?

Decades later, the vet fears Texas’ new election law, SB1, could prevent him from voting for the first time in his life.

Per law, Thompson must either provide part of his social security number or his driver’s license number that matches his registration record with the county or state.

He registered to vote in the 1940′s and they didn’t require that,” said Thompson’s daughter, Delinda Holland.

Since Holland can’t meet the new requirement, his mail-in ballot application was denied twice. The veteran said Harris County election officials never notified him and he had to call to find out both times.

“There’s gonna be a lot of people not gonna vote,” Thompson said. “If I hadn’t have called in about mine, people wouldn’t have known.”

Thompson’s daughter, Holland, who has only missed voting in one bond election herself, said she’s even tried contacting the county and state Secretary of State’s Office to add her dad’s license number to his registration file online. She said she discovered there’s not actually a way to have that done.

Does the Texas law allow for a person to update their voter registration card?

If not, there is a problem with the way the law is written.
If it does, Thompson should submit a new registration card and then request a mail in ballot.

Call one of the "on your side" from a local tv station. Have them go after the lawmakers.

There's no problem with the law, it's working exactly as they intended it to. It has always been about depressing voter turnout.

One of the benefits of changing the law is that the change itself will confuse enough voters to suppress turnout.

Once voters figure out how to navigate it, just change it again. To protect its integrity, natch.

That is one way to look at it. I suspect the vet (Thompson) would disagree with you.

I'm not saying it should be this way, just the opposite. What I'm pointing out is that the assholes that wrote this law had this intention when they drafted it in the first place. There's nothing to "fix" in that regard.

So why would Thompson disagree with me, also a vet, that this law is morally wrong and ridiculous? I bet he's on my side.

If I can do my banking online or on my phone, and taxes online, and renew government licenses online, and pay bills to municipal utilities online, it's pretty outrageous that some people demand all voting-related procedures be treated as if the year is 1900. And it's quite obvious why.

I figured that is what you were saying.

Arizona has some of the same bs going on in the State. So far none of the more radical Bills are going seem likely to pass.

Registration in 1940 is not necessarily lifetime registration. Texas is not obligated to stick to 1940 regulations. And what is so difficult about providing his social security number, drivers license number or state ID number?

No kidding... You STILL can not register to vote online in Texas...

Why not re-register? Problem solved

The moronic veteran had to renew his license more than a few times and he's too ****ing stupid to realize the the Texas DMV can update your voter status in seconds?
Yeah. It’s faux outrage

He's probably an illegal alien wearing an old man mask a la Scooby Do.

The problem is his voter registration card that Texas has from 1940 does not have that info on it. Hence, " that matches his registration record with the county or state." cannot be matched with his mail in ballot request.

One reason why I asked if the law allows for a new registration card to be submitted along with the request for a mail in ballot.

Serious respect for a veteran......Guess we can scratch that off the list you righties supposedly stand for as well.

That's a pretty sad state of affairs. A man who served this country and the idiots in Texas don't want him to vote. Very sad.
