Amid recent American efforts to expand military presence within US borders, Dr. Paul Craig Roberts was quick to describe the Obama administration as a routine violator of the US Constitution. Dr. Roberts, who served as assistant secretary of the treasury in the Reagan administration and played a significant role in creating the economic system that became known as Reaganomics, cited the NSA spying scandal, the drone program and the assassination of American citizens as examples that the government continues to violate the will of the American people. The Voice of Russia contacted Dr. Roberts to inquire about his rather harsh critique of the US government.
VOR chief legal and political correspondent Carmen Russell-Sluchansky spoke with Dr. Roberts to learn more.
It's a pretty strong language to use "coup d'état". You say that the U.S. is such because of a consistent failure to uphold the tenants of the U.S. Constitution. Am I getting that right?
\\\\Yes, that's correct. Beginning with the 21st century with Bush and now Obama, the president is no longer accountable to the rule of law. He's not accountable to the Constitution. We've not had a president in 21st century who should not have been impeached, because all of them have violated the Constitution in numerous ways and these are the reasons impeachment was put into the Constitution – to remove presidents who violated. And they've established that the Constitution is a scrap of paper, they don't have to pay any attention to it and they don't. And all of the amendments that were inserted into the Constitution as the Bill of Rights have been essentially repealed by declarations on the part of the executive branch. Not by law and not by constitution amendment, but by the President assuming the role of a Caesar and simply declaring that the Constitution no longer pertains, that his authority is prime and that whatever he says, goes.\\\\
Let's talk about some of the specifics. Obviously there is a lot of question about the constitutionality of the NSA spying program, PRISM, the drone program and the killing of 3 U.S. citizens. Are those the particulars? What others do you use to illustrate this?
\\\\Yes, these are some of the particulars. The Constitution gives you a right to privacy which cannot be invaded without a court order. But, in fact, everybody's every communication is surveilled. This is strictly unconstitutional. There's no doubt about it. Then we have the habeas corpus. Habeas corpus says that the government cannot simply pick you up and hold you in prison. If you're picked up, within a very short time, they have to go to court, present evidence to a judge why you are arrested, why you are being held. The judge can decide to release you on bail or not release you on bail, but you're in the court system, so you're subject to due process. Well, what the Bush people said and the Obama people have continued is, "No, we don't have to pay any attention to habeas corpus. We can pick up whoever we want anywhere in the world and throw him in prison." That's an amazing violation! If Ronald Reagan or Nixon or even Bill Clinton had done anything like this, they would have been instantly impeached.\\\\
And, in fact, Clinton was impeached for something very different.
\\\\He was impeached by the House, not convicted by the Senate, for having sex with a young woman. So in America you can murder people, throw them in prison, but you're damn sure about not having sex with a young woman!\\\\
Let me ask you, is Congress part of the coup d’état that the Congress has signed off on a lot of these things? They've signed off on the authorization on the use of military force. They've signed off on the reauthorization of the NDAA, the National Defense Authorization Act, and a number of other programs. Is the Obama administration just basically overwriting what Congress supposedly gave them?
\\\\The Congress has let its powers go, because it's intimidated, it's afraid. You see the war on terror. The war on terror gave the executive branch the ability to simply erase the other two branches. Because if you oppose the executive branch, they say, "Oh, you must be on the terrorists' side." And if the Judge rules against them, they simply find a hired judge that will rule for them.\\\\
And regarding Snowden, he's now probably going to be accepting asylum in Russia. You once pointed out that it used to be the other way round. Soviet Russia used to be the one that prosecuted the truth tellers. And it was the U.S. that gave them asylum and tried to protect them. How does this become so opposite to the way that it was?
\\\\I think, in the United States we have got these Nazis, known as neoconservatives. They are actually Nazi to the core. Everyone of them would be very happy in the upper echelons of the Nazi government in Hitler’s Germany. They fit there perfectly. They have this notion that collapse of socialism means that there is no alternative to America. That, in their opinion, makes the US the indispensable nation, that has the right to impose its will on the world. It is a rerun of the French revolution, they are like the Jacobins of the French revolution. What happened in Russia is that in the Soviet Union they had enough experience of all of the tyranny and the lack of accountable government, so they decided to be different. Today it is the US that is being tyrannical and Russia is trying to obey by the law and be accountable and so on
You may remember there was a Hungarian cardinal, Joseph Mindszenty. He was the leader of the Hungarian Catholic church. He was imprisoned by the Nazis. And when the communists came to power in Hungary, he was tortured, he was given a life sentence. And the 1956 Hungarian revolution freed him. And he went to the US embassy in Budapest, was granted political asylum. Just like Julian Assange or Edward Snowden. And the communists would not let him leave. So, he lived in the American embassy in Budapest for 15 years, because the communists would not acknowledge his right to free passage to asylum. And Now the United States is doing exactly that to Julian Assange, and also to Edward Snowden. He is stuck in that airport in Russia. He can live there for the rest of his life. So, where is the evil of the world concentrated now? It is now in Washington. Yes, it is now in Washington.
\\\\
Ostensibly, this is a democratic country. We do go to the polls and elect our president every four years, we elect congress every two years. What is missing here? How is it more of a coup d’etat as a result?
\\\\Under Stalin people voted too. But the government was not accountable to the people. The Party was not accountable to the people. In the US, the government is not accountable to the people. There are about 6 large private interest groups, that actually rule the country. One is Wall Street, one is military-security complex that president Eisenhower warned us of half a century ago. One is the Israel lobby. One is the agribusiness, companies that pollute the food supply. There are also energy and timber lobbies. They write all the laws that the congress passes and the president signs.
You can’t get elected to the Congress or the presidency without the support of these groups, the majority of these groups. Because that is where the money comes from that funds the political campaigns. They elect the people who serve them, who are accountable to them. There is no group in the congress or in the White House that is accountable to the people.

I'm curious. Do you participate on the forum because of curiosity, a desire to educate, or some other purpose. The information you are knowledgeable about is only common knowledge in this Country to people who do not watch TV or bathe in the MSM sound bytes. Many of our military types never overcome their military brainwashing/propaganda teachings. Education teaches the history of the world and USA the way good citizens would want it to be, far from the truth. All of this, as far as I can tell, to prevent the citizens from figuring out who is pulling their strings. Its is not conspiracy theory, it is about business conspiring to maintain their profit streams. It started as Capitalism and now it is Corporatism. That's not progress.

The main reason - curiosity. I do not want to educate anyone. I'm wondering - human reaction to an alternative view. And more. I do not believe that can be freedom and democracy in the country where the power (Media, money, army, police ...) in the hands of the corporations.

If you could only spread the word better maybe we wouldn't have to be working on immigration reform because instead of everyone wanting to leave Russia and come to the United States, maybe they'd stay put and prepare welcome signs for Mexicans headed for Russia.

Re: ‘American neoconservatives are Nazi to the core’ – former Reagan administration o

I don't think it's a fair comparison. Nazism is a wholly different set of evil ideals and tactics than the aristocratic system that neocons endorse. It's not even fair to call neocons fascists. They're not. They're basically the modern version of a dark ages aristocracy.

I live rural, 5 miles from the nearest town and that is only about 800-1000 people. 50,000 people in the whole county, about 40 miles by 40 miles. Life is generally very good. I don't like the educational system much and really abhor the militarization of the local police and taxes continually rise and new regulations that require a registration fee are happening all the time. Nobody seems concerned about gov't power around here and they believe everything that the gov't mouthpieces tell them. The area is mostly Republicans because this area was early OIL and oil millionaires and their influence lingers. They are Republicans and it's the poorest county in New York State if you can believe that. So much for citizens looking out for their own best interests. As long as their babies are fed, clothed and content, all is well. Almost everyone has a few guns, a few cars, and a few dollars. All in the same boat and that's just fine. The area used to be agricultural but most family farms went out of business because you cannot sell meat or milk without Federal inspection (protects big business) and the people think that is for their safety. Now business is tourists like hunters, fishermen and campers and a few old industries related to energy/military manufacture. My thoughts (and yours) would be radical lies to these people. The gov't is the good guy and we fight wars for freedom and democracy and we are always the good guys. Very effective manipulation by the Mass Media and everybody is glued to the TV. My TV has not been connected since 1990, ergo I get all info from the Internet and look for answers. This is to try to give you a real feel for the inside of this Nation, at least a rural feel. The cities are the same just amplified because of population density.

You agree with that nonsense ?

When was the last time you picked up a History book ?

Equating Conservatives to the Nazi's is one of the most ignorant comparisons on the Internet.

And your'e doing it in the face of Obama's and the Democrats scandals.

LowFo voters....what can you do !

Hey knee-jerk. We aren't talking conservatives... we're talking NEO-CONSERVATIVES. There is a hugungous difference.

And though this may sound arrogant, I doubt there are any two people on this forum who has a more encyclopedic knowledge of the neo-con movement.

As for Obama's scandals... they are just an extension of the Bush scandals... that is, there is no difference in the two administrations...

So... the Nazi statement... In that the neo-cons boastfully buy into the noble lie, which was no small part of the Nazi propaganda machine.. absolutely. A stated belief that one must enter into evil to bring about good... yup.

I'm a conservative... never a neo-con.

There's some element of elitism in neoconservative intellectual circles, but at the same time there was an internal criticism of the intellectual and sometimes professional classes in creating meaningful or successful reforms.

The noble-lie bit is overblown and a result of a lonesome newspaper reporter that filled down into Shadia Drury, and from her to other journalists, then to Anne Norton and Adam Curtis.

The noble lie was a Straussian analysis of Plato, who could have argued for the notion that every society or every ruling state is built upon intellectual foundations that are more mythical in proportion to the entire reality, but nonetheless serve to unify the populace and help maintain order. Such examples included the exceptional character of a particular polis.

Edit: ignore first post.

No need or reason to even try to decipher the impenetrable wall of text in the OP. The title alone is enough to make it clear that this is exactly the situation that Godwin's Law was intended to address.

I have no idea what you're talking about... I suspect you don't really either... just parroting propaganda.

Look, Straussian philosophy was all about using the noble lie.

Wolfowitz in was a student and admitted follower of Strauss.

Cheney, though not attending Chicago U, attended Strauss's lectures.

Michael Ledeen wrote two books espousing the virtues of the noble lie

Richard Pipes, director of Team B famously saying "that just because their facts are all wrong, their conclusions from those erroneous “facts” are still correct. Those errors are “just details,” he says. “The important thing was reading the Soviet mindset,”"

Wohlstetter
Kristol
The RAND Corp
Cheney
Wolfowitz
Fukuyama
Rumsfeld
Perle
Ledeen

All of them are quoted on record as endorsing this philosophy to accomplish goals the American people just wouldn't understand.

Re: ‘American neoconservatives are Nazi to the core’ – former Reagan administrati...

Occam, if you don't know what I am talking about, then you are not well versed in even the basic debates about Strauss. Read The City and Man. If you think Strauss is neoconservatism, then you are hopelessly lost. Furthermore, your (or apparently someone else's) supposed encyclopedia-like knowledge of neoconservative actually demonstrates the opposite. It more or less highlights an incredibly novice background, where most of the information is probably gathered by a ton of "amazing" online research. Pages 101-102 declare:

It is therefore with special regard to the ruled and more precisely to the soldiers, the strongest part of the city, that Socrates introduces at this point the noble lie par excellence; that noble lie is about to bring about the maximum of caring for the city and for one another on the part of the ruled (414d3-4). The good city is not possible then without a fundamental falsehood; it cannot exist in the element of truth, of nature. The noble lie consists of two parts. The first part is meant to make the citizens forget the truth about their education or the true character of their becoming citizens out of mere human beings or out of what one may call natural human beings. It surely is meant to blur the distinction between nature and art and between nature and convention. It demands that the citizens regard themselves as children of one and the same mother and nurse, the earth, and hence as brothers, but in such a way that the earth is to be identified with a part of the earth, with the particular land or territory belonging to the particular city in question: the fraternity of all human beings is to be replaced by the fraternity of all fellow citizens. The second part of the noble lie qualifies this qualified fraternity by the fundamental inequality of the brothers; while the fraternity is traced to the earth, the inequality is traced to the god. If the god is the cause of all good things (380c8-9), inequality would seem to be a good thing. The god did not however create the brothers unequal by arbitrary decision, as it were choosing some for rule and others for subjection; he merely sanctioned a natural difference or put a stamp on it.

It is the second part of the noble lie which, by adding divine sanctions to the natural hierarchy, supplies the required incentive for the soldiers to obey the rulers and thus to service the city wholeheartedly. Yet unless one ascribes a weight not warranted by the text to the divine sanction mentioned, one must admit that the suggested incentive is not sufficient. It is for this reason that Socrates introduces at this point the institution of communism: the incentive to justice still being insufficient, the opportunity for injustice to be removed.

Wolfowitz in was a student and admitted follower of Strauss.

Took one course with Strauss, but yes, was a follower of Strauss. The head of his dissertation committee was Wohlstetter, however. Wohlstetter very much shaped Wolfowitz as well as Allan Bloom.

Wohlstetter, also was not a Straussian, rather, was influenced by Charles Pierce. If anything, along with influencing a multitude of those who were under no Straussian persuasion whatsoever, may have influenced a small segment of Straussians, such as the young Wolfowitz, to greater believe in the Soviet threat.

Cheney, though not attending Chicago U, attended Strauss's lectures.

No, he did not. Not a neoconservative, nor a Straussian.

Michael Ledeen wrote two books espousing the virtues of the noble lie

Not a Straussian

Richard Pipes

Not a Straussian. Further, if you read the report, which I assume you have not, you would understand that he, along with many others, were erroneously attacking the CIA estimates as continually downgrading the Soviet threat by creating its own facts. In other words, Pipes and Team B argued that the CIA thought that the Soviet Union was not capable nor willing to engage in aggressive behavior. Pipes and Team B were at least mostly off the mark, but it was not the sort of "noble lie" distortion critics of Strauss had conjured up.

Both Irving and William, yes.

The RAND Corp

God knows why you mentioned this. RAND's biggest problem was that it was playing around in a theoretical box that could not exist in reality, but they thought it did. These were not deliberate tricksters of the Straussian mythology conjured up by pockets of the Left, but rather very intelligent, rational people, who thought that with the information gathered by the Air Force (who continually overestimated the Soviet threat), they could find a way out of nuclear armageddon. They were a victim of their own minds.

Whose books or his lectures you do not read and listen to, apparently. He spent much of his time dismissing such nonsense long ago.

Not a neoconservative, not a Straussian.

Neoconservative, but not a Straussian in the slightest.

Corrections: Wolfowitz took two courses from Strauss, to which Wolfowitz added, "The idea that this has anything to do with U.S. foreign policy is just laughable." Related to that, I forgot to add a reference to Wohlstetter's supposed interest in Quine.

The remark which included both Wolfowitz and Allan Bloom was meant to convey the following: Wolfowitz was shaped by both Wohlstetter and Allan Bloom.
