Question:

What are your thoughts on Transgendered folk. Thought that after that Straight people poll, it might be an interesting discussion. Personally, I'm all for TG rights, even send money to support em. People that know me in RL find this amazingly out of character, but that's how it is.

I can't even begin to imagine the way that transgenderism comes about, but I support their rights fully.

Ditto.
Although, on a personal basis, I haven't gotten along very well with any of the tgs I've known.
That's not to say there aren't any in the world I could get along with, it's just... I've had bad experiences with them.

But I still don't want them to be discriminated against, of course.

Would you be willing to elaborate on your not getting along with them (i.e., more specific information) plus why you think that it is that you don't get along with them? I'm just curious as to your thoughts.

Me too. This person who doesn't know you in RL finds your post out of character too, and I am pleasantly surprised. :2wave:

I doubt you'll find any who are gonna say "I think they should be shunned from life!!!" ;)

However, there is a lot of interesting POV's concerning Trans folk out there, it amuses me really. I have a FLAMING femme gay friend, we're talking he walks in the room and even the deaf, dumb and blind 90 year old man in the back corners gaydar goes off the charts, and he HATES transgender people. Seriously, it blows my mind. We were having coffee (yes, at starbucks) and this obvious FtM walks by and he just rants on... I pointed out the irony of a gay man like himself hating a transgender and his response was "Those people are FREAKS!"

Bout near snorted coffee up my nose.

Going to go out on a limb here and say that most genetic females have two inherent problems with MtF:

1. They OVER do the girly act. Like... bad actors or... because they were male/are (if pre-op) they over compensate for anything male about them.

2. They'll never have a period, so they can't really experience being a woman, thus when they complain about anything... it just don't cut the mustard.

(Okay, those are two complaints a very close gal I know has).

I'm not the bible thumping, hard right wing neo-con I may be seen as here. :)

Most of the ones I've known have just been assholes. Very clique-y, backstabbing, untrustworthy. Immature, seemingly incapable of anything beyond shallow relationships and interactions, often mean, stuck-up, and socially obnoxious.

But I definitely think they should have equal rights.

I don't have any tg friends. When I read your initial post, I wondered whether tgs tend to be jerks because they have had issues with their gender, and I would assume that such emotions would make someone angry, vulnerable, insecure, etc. People like that tend to act in the manner you describe above.

This post of your is hilarious! I love how you slam their personalities and then say they should have equal rights. These are not mutually exclusive things, but I burst into laughter after reading your post.

Thanks for answering my question.

The irony
what's his position on gay rights??

Anyone who is confused about or feel that they are the wrong gender are ****ing insane. This insanity should be discouraged. You do not treat a illness by facilitating it. If a guy walked in saying he was a duck trapped inside a human's body would you add some prosthetic feathers, wings and a bill and call him cured or if a guy was suffering from multiple personality disorder would you give him a birth certificate,ss card and ID for each of his personalities and call him cured?**** no you wouldn't call him cured.**** no you wouldn't call them cured. It should be considered highly unethical to facilitate these mental disorders of these gender confused individuals.Cutting of a mans penis, giving him breast implants and hormone drugs so he can pretend to be something he is not does not cure him, he is still man but now a even more screwed up man.

He's all for gay rights, the whole rainbow of rights, he just cannot stand em... did I give a different impression, I didn't mean too.

I used to feel the same as you. I realized how wrong I was.

I work at a bar that had drag shows every Sunday after my shift. Drag Queens are obviously very different from Transgender People, but some of the Queens are half way to becoming full-fledged women. All of them have always treated me with absolute respect and always tell a great story that makes me laugh. Not to mention they are great tippers. lol

They are just like everyone else, only they are trying to be themselves on a different level. I think we all strive for that one way or another.

I have a decently close friend who is transgender. she was lucky enough to be able to start hormones at a relatively young age, so you would never know if she didn't tell you.

she certainly breaks any stereotypes about trans people. she's a computer and linguistics geek, doesn't participate in the queer community much, and is actually a bit tomboyish in some ways (though, she would disagree).

the idea that she should be treated differently than any other woman baffles me.

Transgenderism doesn't really seem that strange to me because of all the other strange gender-bending things a human can do. There are small numbers of individuals who completely defy any attempt to create a universal definition to classify gender. You can get XY females, XXY males, both parts, no parts, hormone imbalances ect. In reality, almost nothing is "unnatural", just less common than other geno/phenotypes. People who rail against it are really just stating "I am afraid of something different that makes me uncomfortable." The only point of gender-changing surgery is to make the person more comfortable with themselves, and its their own damn choice. If getting gender-changing surgery makes them happier, why knock it?

Perhaps an argument could be held that transgenderism is a mental disorder, but at the end of the day it's a moot discussion: If these people don't feel sick, don't want help, and aren't hurting anybody, the only people who have any reason to care about the source of the mentality are them. Of course I support transgenderism. If it's silly, fine, people have a right to do silly things to their body.

Devil's advocate here:

While they may not harm anyone, they do make the social boundaries shady. This is something that will have to be addressed. There's more than just themselves at stake here.

Take the locker room example: you have a man who really feels like he's a woman. So which locker room would he go to? Should he go to the women's locker room just becuase that's where he feels the most comfortable but at the same time make everyone else uncomfortable? Only a very small percentage of transsexuals actually follow through with sex reassignment surgery. Even with hormones he'll still have man parts. Going back to the locker room, why should transsexuals get exempted from the rule? What makes them "so special"? What if there's a woman in there who is totally "normal" but just feels more comfortable changing around guys? Should she be allowed to go change with the men?

It's nice to know that in my near 3 years here at DP, you have learned absolutely nothing about this issue, and still post bigoted inaccuracies. I would cut you apart in debate for probably the 12th time or so, but it bores me to listen to you spew all of your ridiculous opinions...and note, that's what they are, you never present facts...and you refuse to listen to facts or reason. I post this just to have you understand that, yes, you are still posting inaccuracies about this issue. It is your right. But it does not alter this irrelevancy of what you post.

And yes, Mr Vicchio, your position on this surprises me, somewhat, though not completely. I applaude your ability to examine a situation and come to a reasoned position.

Am I the only one who is not surprised that someone who holds many of Mr. Vicchio's other views could be fully supportive of transgender people?

Do transgender people lead fight against AGW and I wasn't aware?

I was forced to understand the issue when a buddy I played football with, graduated, and disappeared. Two years later she came back, and I'll be damned if you saw her in a bikini and thought anything short of "Yeah, I'd hit that". Her family went absolutely ape **** though, very religious.

So instead of letting hate get to me, I went out and read all I could.

EDIT ADD:

I learned a number of things, the first being most people have, as I did a misconception that some tragedy MUST be the cause for this... I mean he was a linebacker, and a DAMNED good one. Had girlfriends, played baseball... how could he DO THIS?

The more I learned though, the more I realized that it takes... excuse the expression, a lot of balls to go through with a sex change, to really do it. It's not some "walk in a clinic for a snip, clip and tuck with some chest padding" It's a year, generally 2 year process that requires dedication, personal pain and anguish...

I got some respect for anyone that goes through with it.

It's actually not that odd. A lot of people don't realize that there are a lot of division lines within the gay community.

I have the following questions for you:

So are you still in touch with her?
Has her family come to terms with it?
Did you "hit that"? ;)

The first 2 are serious ones.
