Fortunately, being Canadian, I get health care coverage without having to "enroll" anything, just being a citizen is enough.

In the U.S. there are now 31 million people on Obamacare and the number keeps rising, as well as enrollment in Medicaid is way up:

Also:
It has been found that health insurance is not owned by around 44 million adults in the US, while 38 million do not have adequate health coverage.

Poll question today is, how do you get your health care coverage?

VA health coverage

I have Medicare with an advantage plan (WellCare) which pays me (increases my Social Security by) $95/month.

VA health coverage
How does that work?
I looked it up, is this part true?
We're committed to providing free health care for conditions related to military service and for Veterans with catastrophic disabilities and disability ratings of at least 50%.
Just curious

not sure I read that right, you pay $95 a month for WellCare of they pay $95 to your social security?

Since you’re Canadian it might be helpful to point out that Obamacare is not insurance coverage in and of itself. It just establishes a digital market place where people can buy private insurance that may or may not be offset with a subsidy depending on your income.

I pay nothing (directly) to WellCare. Instead of having about $142/month taken from my Social Security (SS) retirement and given to Medicare, only about $47/month ($95 less) is taken from my SS retirement and given to WellCare.

Besides the monthly premium cost reduction, WellCare has no annual deductible before its coverage takes effect and covers both of my prescriptions 100% (I pay no copays for them).

Yeah I was rated 60% in my initial review of medical records. (you don't have to be a 'cripple' to rate that high- scars from wounds and or injuries count.) On the other hand if it isn't in your medical record it can be a more difficult process to prove an injury....

I had emergency transport 100 miles, emergency surgery, follow up surgery, 3 weeks in hospital, home health care follow-up, and outpatient appointments- all free of charge. The first 4 were civilian provided, the last directly through VA. My drugs, even aspirin is free of charge. I get routine cancer screenings, vaccines, blood tests for everything you can think of. The VA doesn't respond quickly at times but the vet has the option to use civilian services in an emergency.... ✌️

Depending on state residence, PPACA’s expanded Medicaid coverage may be available (income dependent) at no out of pocket cost.

Medicaid is one of those things I tend to forget about. In Ohio, you have to have an individual income at or below $17,131 and either be pregnant, have a dependent under the age of 18, have a disability, or be 65 or older. It’s kind of amazing that 3 million people (25% of the population) qualify for that.

Unlike Texas, Ohio also has expanded Medicaid.

just being a citizen is enough.
By way of clarification........... in Canada to have automatic helthcare coverage one must be a legal resident, citizenship is not a requirement.

true, both are automatically covered

as well, as I understand it, setting rules, like coverage for adult children and not being denied because of pre-existing conditions.

The US healthcare model is a terrible joke, and political gridlock will continue to allow it to be a joke.

That is all you need to know about where the US stands (and why we will not resolve this anytime soon.)

so you don't have coverage?

Since they removed the individual mandate things have gotten MUCH better. When Obamacare first hit my premiums doubled while my benefits were cut in half.

Obamacare--like the man it's named after--f_cK!ng sux.

Austria has a universal insurance system called SV, in which 99.9% of all people in the country get health insurance, unemployment insurance, workplace accident insurance and pension insurance.

The SV is decentralized, with each state having a branch.

I am insured for healthcare via the ÖGK (Austrian Healthcare System), specifically via the SGKK (the Salzburg state branch).

Unemployment insurance comes from the Labour Market Agency AMS.

Accident insurance via the AUVA.

Pension insurance from the PVA (retirement age: 65)

All 4 of those branches (ÖGK, AMS, AUVA, PVA) are the main pillars of the universal comprehensive insurance system (SV) and therefore make up our social safety net.

It is deducted monthly from your gross wage, with employer and employee each paying 50% of insurance costs.

All employees in Austria are automatically represented by a union too, working for and advising them on their behalf on workplace disputes, wage problems, firing regulations etc.

I also have private car insurance from UNIQA, private accident and liability insurance and legal assistance insurance, as well as a home/apartment value insurance.

The SV ran a budget surplus last year, like most years before and has basic no debt.

I just went to look at WellCare (Cigna reduces my medicare premium, but not by that much), but they don't have it in CO.

Medicare, with an advantage plan that has some hearing, vision and dental (the dental actually isn't too bad) benefits.

Yep, the availability of HMO and PPO “give back” advantage plans varies by zip code.

Slightly OT.....but what do you folk pay for your healthcare premiums? Based on income as a couple we pay about $1,500 total, a year for both of us. That covers all doctors, hospitals, specialists, diagnostics etc with zero restrictions or copays. Does not include glasses, prescriptions, cosmetic procedures ,chiropractic services or dental. Our employer insurance, no charge as we are retired, covers that.
