A good many political figures were amazed at the spread of capitalism in the 17th and 18th centuries, starting in England, France, Germany and then to the colonies of the New World...America, where it finally became the prime mover that empowered people in their struggle to free themselves from the old feudalism.

Much has changed in the last decade or two.
Capitalism now seems to view democracy as a barrier that inconveniently prevents it from totally commodifying every aspect of civilized life.
Clearly, capitalism is intent on morphing into a much more authoritarian form of government whose sole purpose is to facilitate capitalism and nothing else. And as usual, organized religion is more than happy to act as a lubricant to spread authoritarianism far and wide.
There's a bonus for them, theocracy. One might be tempted to wonder if theocracy and fascism are strange bedfellows.
Make no mistake, they were made for each other and history shows that they've been in bed many times before, with the same bastard children being spawned from such an unholy union.
The elites won't bother the fundamentalists because they're comfortably insulated, and the fundies are happy to grant a free pass to the elites as long as they bankroll the military as enforcers. The churchies get what they want and the elites get what they want.

And we here on the ground, far from the golden palaces, get the shaft.

The Far Right is sprouting throughout Europe and South America now, and democracies around the world are starting to fall.
It would seem that this was the logical progression of capitalism all along, at the expense of all else.

I think you don't realize who donates to whom. Corporations, lobbyist, wall street firms, etc donated much more money to Hillary than Trump in 2016. This enabled her to outspend Trump 1.4 billion to 968 million. This election season, the Democrats are way out front in the money race. What I don't think quite a few realize is both parties owe their hearts and souls to the moneyed elite, to corporations, wall street firms, lobbyist, special interests, mega money donors like Soros and the Kock Brothers. One doesn't bite the hand that feeds them.

what these moneyed folks do is donate more of their money to the party, candidates they think will win, then donate a bit to whom they feel will lose. This way, regardless of who wins, they will owe them. Perhaps you forgot Sanders naming Hillary Clinton as Wall Street Hillary for all the money she received from those firms during the primary campaign.

In 2016 Fahr LLC donated 90.5 million, all to Democrats, Renaissance Technologies donated close to 60 million, but split it 35 million to Dems, 25 million to Reps, so each party, candidates will owe them. The list goes on. Take a look.
