Abortion in France is legal on demand during the first 14 weeks from conception.[1][2] Abortions at later stages of pregnancy are allowed if two physicians certify that the abortion will be done to prevent grave permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman; a risk to the life of the pregnant woman; or that the child will suffer from a particularly severe illness recognized as incurable

So, assuming this is a fair summary of French abortion law, would you be ok with this kind of compromise law.

French women do not have a "constitutional right" to abortion, and this "western industrialized country" apparently allows for regulation of abortion and mandates that women bear children after a certain point in the pregnancy.

What say, ya'll?

This looks like a reasonable compromise to me.

No!

France just liberalized its chemical abortion laws to get around the two physician consent problem.
France allows chemical abortions after 14 weeks?

And if there was support to liberalize chemical abortions after 14 weeks, then why not just eliminate the 2 physician thing?

EDIT - I don;t think the chemical abortion thing has anything to do with the 2 physcian thing - the chemical stuff is through week 7, I believe. The 2 physicans are needed after 14 weeks.

I think this is where most of us are. Most of us on the left are for reasonable access to abortion but not on demand abortions all the way up to 9 months (medical necessity obviously an exception). The time window can vary from person to person, but generally, we are not for elective abortions post viability (despite what the right likes to suggest)

BUT as another poster noted, I'm not a woman and it shouldn't be up to me.

Yes!
Yes!
Yes!

It should be as easy as possible for a female to have an abortion.

What's not to like about an abortion?

First, it empowers females.
Second, it helps with the overpopulation problem.
Third, it helps reduce the number of violent predators.
Fourth, a fetus gets to avoid enduring this vale of tears.

That's not what I've observed and that is not anything close to legislation that has been pushed by every Dem politician out there. They are all for abortion on demand, at any point, for any reason.

I voted no because I'm against abortion except for the reasons given in your OP for allowing them after 14 weeks (e.g. certified danger of significant permanent harm). The reality is, the US was the outlier in the world, including Europe, with being too permissive with abortion.

Sure…

I’m good with that when we make it easy and widely accessible. National healthcare is what makes this possible.

Reasonable?

I would agree to that if the law included informing the father of the pregnancy and giving him the same 14 week window to opt out of being responsible for the baby if the mother decided to carry it to term.

I agree with Frances take on it, my only change would be to eliminate the FOR MENTAL HEALTH reason. The thought of someone not wanting to be a parent and dont think theyre ready so their mental health is at stake is a horrible reason to have an abortion and shouldnt be permitted, they can give the child up for adoption no questions asked. Or the im poor so my mental health is at stake so abortion is ok is also a horrible reason. We have seen this in California where being on the lower economic scale is a good enough reason to justify mental health concerns and ok late term abortions. That language needs to be removed from the law and then I would support it.

Why even ask when you already know what the answer is going to be?

The evangelical lobby in the U.S. doesn't care about medicine. They only think about personhood for fetuses. France's laws are based on scientific compromises in order to protect women from danger. Ectopic pregnancies and other congenital defects can be discovered in the first 14 weeks and those pregnancies terminated. After that, there is no excuse. But in the U.S., they expect rape victims to carry their rapist's child to term. It's sick.

I’m not a woman, but if this was an actual compromise and we could get it enshrined into federal law then it would certainly be better than where we are at now so I’d need to be convinced of a reason not to support it.

Nederland, EU papers sufficient. Everyone understands Nederland is the safety valve; but the key here is France is very proactive when it comes to family support, contraception, morning after pills, family planning, paid leave and the safety net - which you folks tend to leave out.

A good summary:

France allows for abortion on request as long as the pregnancy is within 14 weeks. Abortions at later stages of pregnancy up until birth are allowed if two physicians certify that the abortion will be done to prevent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman; a risk to the life of the pregnant woman; or that the child will suffer from a particularly severe illness recognized as incurable.

This is basically how the laws were in most states before the recent SCOTUS decision.

You're asking folks on the Left if they would have compromised as if there haven't already been numerous compromises already. It also ignores the fact that the Right Wing doesn't want any compromises. They're pushing to outright ban abortion all together, in some states (5 so far) with no exceptions for Rape, Incest or saving the mother's life.

Consider that 2% of all pregnancies are ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus. These types of pregnancies cannot be saved, only aborted to save the life of the mother. That's one in 50 pregnancies.

No, abortion should be 100% up to the woman until birth.

I support leaving it up to the States.

I suppose Congress could pass one which would apply to the few "territories" we control.

I don't know about this "mental health of the woman" point though, so I would not support that at ANY level, much less Federal.

But again, I accept leaving it up to the States.

Can't vote though; no "Other" option again.

Can we have France's medical system, too? They have plenty of clinics nearby everyone, low-cost health care and low or no-cost abortions, and most of all, a very small and not very loud anti-abortion movement.

Doesn't sound bad at all.

It wouldn't be my ideal abortion law. I'd extend the deadline for abortion on demand further out than 14 weeks, and get rid of the two-doctor requirement to get one after that. I'd probably also add a rape and incest exception for after the on-demand deadline. But it's a fairly reasonable compromise.

I'm assuming there's nothing the government could do to stop a chemical abortion anyway.

you mean, when you give some of what they want, they don't feel motivated to oppose? say it ain't so!

I never said this was a compromise only of the Left. I do not agree with the complete ban of all abortions, either. However, both "sides" in this often espouse the far end of the spectrum of options - legal until birth, or illegal from conception or even fertilization.

I certainly have no objection to abortion out of medical necessity. I've often suggested that the Canadian system sounds good, but there the Left complains even though there is no law against abortion at all, and it's all run by the medical system, yet they have very few abortions past 20 weeks, I'm told.
