Aside from the fact that your number is way off, our trade imbalance with China just means that we buy more stuff from them than they buy from us.

Trade deficits are not added to the national debt. For example, during the Clinton administration, the trade deficit went up dramatically, while the national debt went down.

Even if we had a $420 billion trade imbalance with China (which we don't) that wouldn't put us $420 billion deeper in debt. It would just mean that we bought $420 billion more stuff from them than they bought from us.

Our debt is a problem, but not a big problem. Simply reversing recent Republican tax cuts would go a long way toward reversing the trajectory.

Our deficit problem is very simple. General spending hasn't increased, so it's not to blame. Social Security and Medicare spending have increased, but there's not much to be done about that. It's demographics, and both programs are far too popular to be meaningfully cut. Likewise, the social safety net can be cut in only small ways.

There's only one way to rein in the deficit: higher taxes. But Republicans won't allow it—and until that changes there's nothing we can do. Ignore anyone who tries to tell you it's any more complicated than that.
