World in $1.5tn ‘plastics crisis’ hitting health from infancy to old age, report warns

I know where I stand among the general populace, and as a strong second amendment advocate. I'd be fine

That said, I do like my AC, and running hot and cold water.
;)

If your AC manufacturing workers are too busy farming their own land to make your AC, you may have a problem. Having a big gun isn't going to help.

Well yeah I wasn't picking the hunter gatherer model if it could be avoided. (the AC comment)

If it cannot be avoided, then I'd do ok.

Well, fortunately it can- at least, so far. So no point worrying about it.

Not sure what that means. I thought it meant farming for your own and your family's needs.

Because anything beyond that still requires packaging.
Grocery stores existed before we had plastic. People sold food before we had plastic.

Well yeah sure. People also still had transportation before cars. But good luck getting the modern world to go back to that.

The US under Biden unfortunately backed away from it's support of the Global Plastics Treaty stance about caps.

He didn't give a shit about future generations.

What a dumb asshole.

Wrong. Per chatGPT, links provided.

Here are ten major environment-focused initiatives launched by President Biden—designed to combat climate change, improve environmental justice, and promote clean energy:

  1. Rejoining the Paris Agreement on his first day in office, signaling renewed U.S. global climate leadership Axios+15Environmental Defense Fund+15Brain and Environment Symposium+15.
  2. Setting a national emissions-reduction goal: cutting U.S. greenhouse gas emissions 50–52% by 2030 (updated to 61–66% by 2035) relative to 2005 levels Environmental Defense Fund+2The Washington Post+2.
  3. Justice40 initiative, committing ≥ 40 % of federal clean energy and climate investment benefits to historically disadvantaged communities The White House+3Environmental Defense Fund+3Wikipedia+3.
  4. American Climate Corps, a national service program training youth for conservation, clean energy jobs, resilience work, and habitat restoration (launched Sept 2023) Wikipedia+1.
  5. “America the Beautiful” / 30×30 conservation campaign, aiming to conserve and restore at least 30 % of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 Environmental Defense Fund+5Wikipedia+5Wikipedia+5.
  6. Greenhouse Gas Standards for power plants (“Clean Power Plan 2.0”), targeting coal and gas power sector emissions with new EPA regulations Wikipedia.
  7. Phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the AIM Act, requiring an 85 % reduction in HFC production and use by 2036 reuters.com.
  8. Stronger Clean Air Act rules and vehicle emissions standards, including tighter soot (PM2.5) and auto tailpipe rules for cars, light and heavy trucks Brain and Environment Symposium.
  9. Lead pipe and drinking water infrastructure plan, funded as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to eliminate lead service lines and combat PFAS contamination The White House+2AP News+2.
  10. Nature‑based solutions and coastal/forest resilience framework, via federal guidelines and funding (e.g. at COP28 joining ENACT, Interior’s nature-based roadmap, and OSTP resource guide) The White House.

Plastics and cars.

Kill many people, but those that live are ok with the death, because it's slightly more convenient for them.

Sure it is. Plastics are pursued because of their cost. Corporations go with plastic packaging over recycling friendly options like glass because they generate more profits by doing so.
I gotta tell you the amount of plastics im forced to waste just because “muh price point is most profitable” is absolutely insane.

Anyone else have the problem of plastic containers being so thin that you have to be careful holding them when opening, so that the contents don’t blow out all over the room when the seal breaks?

I don't know if it has been talked about here yet, but I was an early proponent of 3D printing. I thought it was very cool. Still do. But the plastic based 3D consumer printing industry is a large growing contributor to plastics waste and disposal. Sure it is possible to use recycled or biodegradable plastics in the production process, but that is not the norm, and the waste and usually useless plastic baubles at the end do not justify the existence. I think the focus for the consumer market needs to shift to metals and away from plastics.

Go to Timmies, get a paper straw for a cold drink in a .............. plastic cup

As a human species, were are f....d. Because we will NEVER sacrifice creature comforts for the sake of the planet.
My drink comes in a paper cup. I don't know why they don't use paper for all of them except they are opaque and you can't see the delicious concoction within.

Not cold drinks. Hot drinks come in paper cuts lined with some sort of plastic to retain the heat. Unless you frequent some "woke" coffee shop trying to do their best to be eco-friendly ;)

I'm speaking specifically to TH. I know that is their system, but I am attempting to guess why. The paper cups hold the cold liquids just as well as the hot. The only reason that immediately comes to mind is the opacity difference. The durability isn't really a question. Price? Ehhhhh. I hope not.

As George Carlin once said and I paraphrase, "The Earth will be fine. It's the people who are f****d."
It's true. Though, eventually (8 billion years) the Earth will be fully engulfed by the expanding Sun with life disappearing a few billion years before that. Then what? :geek:

We put a lot of time, money, and effort into making cars safer.
