WNBA - Why is it still even around?

Do WNBA players deserve more pay?

the NBA makes $8 BILLION dollars a year... the WNBA LOSES $10 Million dollars a year.

The NBA also almost entirely funds the WNBA. Is it fair to have WNBA players complaining about salaries not high enough?

"I'm at a loss for words sometimes, talking about this," she said. "It's unfortunate that men make more money for the same amount of work, or even less work."

Draymond Green responds like this:

"I'm really tired of seeing them complain about the lack of pay, b/c they're doing themselves a disservice by just complaining."

The WNBA makes 60 million dollars but it costs $70 million to run... losing $10 million dollars a year.

I personally get tired of hearing the unequal pay argument... Serena makes the 4th highest salary out of men and women combined. Why? She draws interest, crowds, sales, more than most of the men and people pay, so she earns. Nobody really watches the WNBA. Why? It is sloppy and not interesting to watch. They lose money because the sport sucks. I will make a thread about women's soccer as well, because that one is even worse.

The WNBA generates revenues of $60 million annually, but it also has costs in excess of $70 million annually. So, the WNBA does not make money. It has turned an average $10 million net loss (revenue – costs) per year, since its inception in 1996.

One of the main reasons that the WNBA remains in existence is that it is subsidized by the NBA, which are able to sustain this $10 million loss every year.

You know who is failing women's sports? Women and Feminists... they are not supporting the sports with their money...
There’s another difference, the NBA averages 18,000 fans per game to 6,700 for the WNBA. Total comparisons can be found here.

I’d say the players in the WNBA have the right to complain about their salaries, but they don’t have the right to get an increase or deserve one when the league is losing money. They’re lucky the NBA subsidizes them or all of them would be out of a job.

I am a fan of the WNBA and I think a lot of sports fans don't take the time to appreciate how well these ladies play. Taurasi, Sue Bird, Swoopes, Cooper, Fowles, Catchings, and Moore in their heyday were all something very special to watch.

Major League Baseball subsidizes their teams in small markets and nobody mentions that.

PS: I also find the US Women's soccer team far more entertaining to watch than the mens.I watch as much ladies golf as I do the men.

Sports is chauvinistic.......period.
Apples to Oranges. MLB with their luxury tax subsidizes all teams who don’t go or pay their players’ salaries above a certain threshold. It’s a salary cap of a different kind which isn’t a salary cap. But any team who pays their players more than the salary cap among is taxed a certain amount, percentage on the salaries the team pays above the salary cap, let’s say salary limit which is distributed to the teams below the salary cap. This is used to try to maintain a competitive balance between the teams more than to keep the small market teams alive.

The major difference here is all the money taxed above the salary limit or cap is kept within MLB’s 30 teams. The money or subsidy isn’t given to a different league outside of MLB like the NBA is giving to the WNBA. WNBA teams aren’t in the NBA. They’re separate leagues.

MLB would have to subsidize either the Japanese baseball leagues or the Mexican baseball leagues for this to be the same. MLB doesn’t. the NBA does subsidize the WNBA. Let’s face it, there’s just not enough fan interest in the WNBA games to keep that league alive if left on their own.

Your comparison would have more validity if you compared the WNBA to the NCAA where almost all colleges subsidize their woman’s sports programs from revenues generated by the men’s sports programs. But here again, the subsidy is kept within the college, not given to another college or league in the case of the WNBA. Money made from an Ohio State’s or Alabama football programs don’t subsidize a Kent State’s or a Alabama state’s football programs. They do however subsidize woman’s sports within Ohio State and Alabama’s university. Not another college or league.

The pittence of money the NBA throws at the WNBA is good for the game.

Could be. But the league loses money which is the point of the OP, do those who play in the WNBA deserve a pay raise if their team and league are losing money?

The OP insinuated that there shouldn't be a WNBA because it's not turning a profit.
The poll asked the question, “Do WNBA players deserve more pay?” Since that organization is losing money, my answer was no. That the WNBA players have the right to complain about their pay, but they don’t deserve more pay until the league makes money. Now if the owners of each team want to pay them more, I’m fine with that. The money comes out of their pockets.

As for the insinuation that the league shouldn’t be around, that again is up to the owners of the teams in that league. If they want to lose money, that is up to them. I don’t give a coyote’s howl about the WNBA. It could fold tomorrow; I wouldn’t miss it. It could keep on playing from here to eternity, I wouldn’t care. I return to the poll question with the word deserve. Until the teams, the league can draw enough fans to their games to put them above water, I think the players are very lucky for the NBA’s largess in keeping the league around and the players playing. Deserve more, no. If they’re paid more, that up to the owners of each team.

I don't think it's stupid at all. The physical strength difference between males and females is real.

The only people I see who don't seem to grasp the degree of difference between males and females are those deluded people who think men who call themselves women should be allowed to compete in women's sport.
What guys like @Rogue Valley and other's that apparently fall for the men, and especially white men, are evil, line is that my topic is not even about men/women... it is about economics. They just don't see it because their rage filled goggles blind them at the mere mention of a salary difference. Then come the insults... LOL

The bold is total BS and if the WNBA wasnt WOMENs basketball you wouldnt have posted on it, period.

Your record of continually posting poorly-obscured misogynistic threads 'discussing' the differences between men and women and their treatment is solid evidence. LOL it's a joke you are calling the people objecting 'rage filled.' You need to take a long look in a mirror.

I never said anything in this thread about men, or white men. Quote me.

Your WNBA assertion is so weak you have to resort to character assassination.

Next you'll be using ZeroHedge to support your nonsense.

No one denies the physical differences.

What thread are you reading?

Everyone will note that you have failed to quote me referring to "white men" in this thread as you claimed (Post #183).

Your lies here are pretty low Bodi. Especially for a DP long-timer.
