ith 60,000 dead, Mexicans wonder why drug wardoesn't rate in presidential debate
Much of Latin America was dismayed that they got only a glancing mention inRomney and Obama's final presidential debate.

That means no candidate talked about the drug trade, despite historicviolence playing out in Mexico, much of it along the 2,000-mile border that theUS shares.

I have never understood why we do not do more with Mexico, and why the people of Mexico do not stand up to this on their own. I wouldn't mind it if we started scrambling jets out of Texas to bomb Mexican drug facilities. Our passive interest in the plight of those living on the border is really embarrassing.
If we drop bombs on the production facilities, we MIGHT stop production, which would be devastating to a great deal of high paying government jobs here in the US.
Think about it. Less drugs making it into the country means less cops employed specifically to bust drug dealers. Less drug dealers and users busted means considerably less prison staff. Drug enforcement is a billion dollar a year industry. Average DEA officer makes just over 55k a year. Average prison guard, 45K. Typical cop, if they've been in the force for a few years, is making between 45-60K, depending on state. Then there are all the outfitters of these people...less cops = less guns and tasers, etc. Fewer patrol cars. So on and so forth.
Well I am sure the detoxing addicts will find other highs or commit other crimes, so most of those jobs would be safe. It isn't as if we are lacking in meth labs here at home.
i'm telling you, this is big business, and at the end of the day, the current bulk of law enforcement in this country needs the drug trade. They'd be out of a job without it.

Yes, it's all about money. Crime pays.
Hey, so I've been looking at that pic of the cat for a while now....and I'm trying to determine...is that cat smoking? It looks like it's got a smoke dangling out it's maw...
With 60,000 dead, Mexicans wonder why drug war doesn't rate in presidential debate
Maybe it's due to fact they Romney and Obama are not running for president of Mexico. So whether one or a hundred thousand Mexicans are dead is irrelevant to the presidential debate.

Besides that point even if they brought it up, there would be nothing to say because there is nothing either of them could do about the problem.
Its a sad statistic that is very much relevant to US policy with the Drug War, immigration, trade, etc.

Because they make living on this.
DEA makes living on drug case. FBI makes living on terror case.Without these cases, they lose value to exist. So if there is none, they createone.
Toexpand their power, DEA invented "War on drugs"; FBI and Pentagon invented "War on Terror". Under those two wars, drug business andterror activities become prosperous. So are the DEA, FBI and Pentagon. They gotfat budget and expanded power - Patriot Act and NDAA.
We've tried to help them before, and they just spit in our face in return, so **** them. Isolate the cartels, prevent them from coming here through any means necessary, and let Mexico deal with it. If they can't, then we cut them a deal. If we have to do their job for them, and exterminate the cartels, we take payment by absorbing Mexico as a US territory. No more of these chicken**** games with these corrupt jackasses who cower in their mansions as they pawn their problems off on us.I have never understood why we do not do more with Mexico

It's embarrassing to read another citizen post such uninformed and belligerent tripe.
Don't we have enough wars going on around the globe? Now you want to bomb Mexico? Egads!
The truth is that the drug prohibition CANNOT succeed. The government is not capable of eliminating vices amongst humans. I think you are seriously kidding yourself to pretend otherwise.
For the various enforcement bureaucracies, including the prison system, the drug prohibition is the gift that keeps on giving, in perpetuity. From the bureaucratic perspective, it is The Goose That Lays Golden Eggs.
For taxpayers, it is a perpetual futility and a very large consumer of wasted tax revenue.
