It seems that although the parties are aligned so we have just the two major parties, could that change in the future? With the Dems we have the presently major part of the party that is moderate, but there is a growing segment of the party that is both younger and very progressive. Some call it socialist. This Dem party could easily break into two parties as the difference grows between these two segments continues to divide them. then we have the GOP. Now most people think the party is very solidly behind Trump, but he will be out of office in a very short while and will those who have felt that the party has become too much Trump, start to push back on those who only feel loyalty to Trump. If this happens, and I suggest it will, the party may become of two minds, those who wish to continue the road where Trump has lead and those who want to become the old GOP party. It could cause a split so huge that the party might become two. I think this is far fetched, but in the end might be the best thing that could happen to our country. The present two party system not only does not work well and is hurting our country.

More than two parties is impractical given the winner takes all nature of our election process. it's literally hardwired into the system.

This. So only as our elections are First Past the Post, we will only have two major parties. If we moved to Proportional or Weighted Choice elections, then things would change.

I think it is inevitable that true conservatives break from the populist and autocratic Trump party.

The first of the split off parties whether from the Right or the Left faces election bloodbaths for years. They are just going to split the votes from one end of the spectrum and that is a tough row to hoe. Could a moderate 3rd party develop that does not have to face splitting the votes of a former major party? That would seem to be more of a possibility as moderates find less comfort in either major party.

Currently there are more independents than reside in either major party which might again suggest a moderate 3rd party developing.

It does appear that the GOP is ripping itself to shreds. Since they have truly lost their way, they are getting what they deserve.

If the GOP does implode we really lose something we may have already lost, a true Conservative voice in this country. The Trumphumpers are not Conservatives no matter how much they try to claim that title. They would not know a real Conservative if it ran into them attached to the front grill of a Mack truck.

The Humpers are part of the Radical Right, with no core principles other than burning the libs and whiteness. Since when is trying to get the US Congress and the VP to flip State Election Laws and their EC delegates on their ears conservative in any sense. The country is not better off without a true Conservative voice. It just isn't whether one agrees with their positions or not. It certainly is not better off with the Radical Right running around claiming to be Conservatives.

I'd certainly like to see a far right, center-right, center-left, and far left party.

By and large we could get back to sensible pragmatic policies. And there could always be alliances, ie, the bulk of the left and some of the center-right people banding together to establish some form of universal basic healthcare.

Huh? Who are these moderates?

Wow. Thats about as wrong and dumb as a post can get. You know nothing about conservatives or conservatism, but then again, actual knowledge of a subject is not a prerequisite for liberal ranting.

Nice try. But not even close. Tell me what CONSERVATIVE principle is satisfied by Federal government officials trying to rip authority for elections from the states in a Republic? What conservative principle is satisfied by one state trying to flip the EC delegate process of other states.

Then when you get through with those questions you can tell me what Conservative principles are embodied by Trump and his sycophants.

I doubt that our system will spawn a competitive third party going forward. It's a fundamental flaw.

Trump governed as the most conservative president since Reagan. Unless you are next going to try and argue that he governed as a liberal.

* The Republican Party is outdated economically and socially
* The Democratic Party moved toward the Republican Party economically
* Green Party principles are being debated and starting to happen in the Democratic Party

As long as we have the two major parties promoting and enough of their followers brainwash with the Good v Evil mentality nothing will change.

Once enough people evolve past thinking a bad person from their party is better than a good person from the other party then we have a chance.

It's a nice idea that the needs of the Electorate would determine party structure in our country.

But it don't work like that.

What we need or want has little to nothing to do with how things work around here.

There're two major parties because of how our system is set up.
The system doesn't allow for multiple parties to thrive.

We will have only 2 major parties at a time until we change how we handle our voting.

Straw man argument. Comparing Trump to Reagan is meaningless in a discussion of political principles. Try again. Try answering the questions posed in post 12. Come on. Its not that hard. There are some positions of the Radical Right that are similar to Conservative principles but an overall analysis of the Radical Right is an unrecognizable hodgepodge which is of course a characteristic of populism if anything, not Conservatism.

Probably not.

Unfortunately we will continue to muddle along with Democrats being ran by the far left and Republicans completing the shift to the party of Trumpism... leaving an even larger number of people somewhere in the middle with no other options.

The underline condition is establishment controls down to the state level with a great deal of influence on how elections play out, and perhaps a complicit media that has no real interest in giving any 3rd party the time of day.

See #15. The US Green Party isn't far-left. Are you far-right?

We have more than 2 parties already. The real question is will those other parties ever get enough support to be viable challengers to the main two.

NO Parties would be best of all (535 independent votes instead of basically 2), and maybe an even better solution than term limits. Governance should not be a 'team' sport.

No.

The two parties have the connection and their usual backers.

If a influential player came along with business and political ties and formed a 3rd party................. it could take off.

I would love to see 4-5 paties.

There's a growing number of moderate republicans that don't like the direction their party is heading or it's new corrupt un-American leadership....so I wouldn't be surprised if they did break off and try to form a new party. If the Democrat party gets too progressive there's a lot of moderate Democrats that may join them.

But...

His policies were conservative. That isnt arguable except to people who know nothing abut conservatism. And who, exactly, make up this imaginary 'radical right' that you are describing?
