The probability we are the ONLY intelligent life in the Universe being so small, I'm going to go with the premise that yes, there is IL out there. On some rock somewhere in the Universe there are being posting on their version of Debate Politics arguing over whether the Upstairs Goblernight Conglomerate has the right idea or the Downstairs Flagnat Continuum is the best political entity follow.

The point being, I think it's out there.

Will we, in the postsers lives on DP, ever discover this life? By discover I mean either First Contact with Interstellar travellers or by means of detecting their transmissions. Radio, TV, Microwave or maybe we'll tap into the Galactic Sub-Space Radio network.

What say you. I think we will, we're so close to doing it. I think if we put a system of radio telescopes on the far side of the moon, we'd hear them. They are out there.

What say you?

Shoot, it can be difficult finding intelligent life on earth.

Yes, I think that everytime I log into DP and read the comments of some people.

BUT life on Earth wasn't the question! :P

Dude, I think intelligent life is becoming increasingly rare on Earth, so if we need to look outside of Earth's immediate area in space, we'd better get cracking lest we wait too long and Earth finds itself populated with only people who don't understand science.....There is also the matter of what we would do were we to learn of extraterrestrial life...We can't build a wall around the planet.

Edit:
I see now that X Factor had the same notion I did. I hadn't seen his remark prior to writing mine...

I look around at this spinning rock we call Earth from my perspective & from my experience over the past 57 years, and I have concluded there is no intelligent life on Earth so, I'm not so sure we will find intelligent life anywhere 'out there' in the great beyond ........

The size of the universe and distances involved are so great that it is most unlikely that we will ever make contact. It will take 100's, 1000's or millions of years for any alien transmission to reach us and just as long for them to receive the answer.

I think the standing joke is that the proof that intelligent life is out there, is that they have not tried to contact us!
In reality there could be several possibilities.
They are out there, but have the same physics limitations we have, and most of the Universe is simply too far.
They developed in such a different way than we did, that our communications technologies are not compatible, ect.
There was a hard science fiction writer in the 80's called James P. Hogan, who had several books on the topic.
Inherit the Stars was the first one, quite a good series.

I think it's likely there are some out there, very very unlikely we will ever communicate. When you look at how far and wide space goes it becomes almost impossible for that kind of contact to happen. If there was intelligent life on mars, sure we could make contact. Intelligent life on a different solar system in our galaxy would be hard to find but I guess possible. IL in a different galaxy in our universe would be damn near impossible. And to assume that they are travelling all around the universe, we would have to assume that they've mastered travel that goes so far above the speed of light that it just feels like science fiction. If they went 100 times the speed of light then it still might take a million years to reach earth. The numbers are staggering to say the least. Even if they were submitting radiowaves in to the universe, it would be two far away for us to ever hear very likely, or so weak that we wouldn't find them unless we knew what to look for, and no way to translate if we did find them.

The chances are essentially the same as winning the lottery 10 times in a row in my opinion.

someone will build the wall and they will make the aliens pay for it .............

check out the image at this link. i'd post it here, but it's better full sized.

the scale of that and the number of suns and worlds floating around in it is mind boggling. it seems at least somewhat likely that we're not the only planet with intelligent life. will we discover definitive proof of it in our lifetimes? i tend to doubt it. the distances are just too great. but still, looking at that image generates wonder in me, as well as a bit of vertigo.

Yes, it's almost certain that life exists or existed or will exist on other planets, but it is unlikely that we will ever see anything more than alien microbes in our lifetime

I agree the distances are extreme and the chances small. I think our best bet will be signals detected that have been traveling for a very long time or a subspace (I KNOW It's Scifi right now...) type communication rather than First Contact.

The only way interstellar travel is possible is if:
Einstein was wrong about light speed and his theory of Relativity
Time Space can be folded somehow to allow for travel.

You should see the Milky Way when far out to sea, on a cloudless night with no moon. You feel very tiny.

Hey, great Xs think alike.

I believe there might be information out there that maybe proves there is, fact-1 we got a new President that can see all the files and for some reason he feels the need to start a new branch of the military, the space force, maybe he knows something.
Before some of y’all start hating Trump, let’s just look at that.

hope it would be interstellar it would be worrisome if we found intelligent life and it was confined to its home planet

I strongly believe there is other intelligent life out there. Hell, there is probably intelligent life out there so advanced that we would seem like mice in comparison.

But I also believe, equally strongly, that we will not discover them or make contact for generations to come, if ever. The distances are just so vast. Though I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Radio telescopes on the far side of the moon?

Would be OK if you dared put your feet there.

Don't worry, snake is a good birth, you're high on the food chain, fairly well protected against mosquitoes.

Someone on Maui who told me that we're presently being visited by seventeen different races.

I'm more sympathetic to the Rare Earth hypothesis than I used to be. So I'll say probably not.

The known universe is 46.5 billion light years in any direction, so the extremes are out of the question as far as we know - however -

The closest star systems to us are only 4.2 and 4.3 light years away, so contact back and forth is possible even with the technology we currently have, as things progress who knows.

Just for more reference, there are 22 other systems ranging from 6.0 to 11.7 light years away. All far closer than 1000's or millions of years out.

I watched an interesting documentary last week about the octopus. They're super intelligent to the point of being sentient. Turns out that the octopus is the other branch of life that evolved on earth, whereas all other animals evolved on the first branch. Their limiting factor is that they die after they reproduce, otherwise they would live a long time and probably be ridiculously smart. More recently, large populations of them have been gathering to share intelligence and skills, something they've never done before (as far as we know), so they may be able to get smarter a lot faster before they die.

Dolphins are another.

We probably have sentient life right here on Earth but our human egoic way of seeing things prevents us from seeing other kinds of intelligence.

If we search the universe for life that's intelligent in the way that we are intelligent, that would be an extremely limited search. If you look at planet Earth, our type of mammalian intelligence is unique to us. No other animal shares it. That makes us unique on our planet... not "better", but unique. Evolution surely furnishes other beings with other types of awareness that are just as amazing, but very different looking/acting than us.

I don’t doubt intelligent life is out therein the galaxy, possibly in quite large numbers.

But I think the distances between stars are just an insurmountable obstacle.

That’s why we don’t have Aliens visiting the Orange One in the White House.

But I bet there is a really slow (meaning light speed limited) communication between civilizations out there.

We just haven’t tuned in to the right frequency.

We will.

Looking at the number of possible worlds, I say there is a good chance that life, and possibly intelligent life exists. But the huge distances involved makes travel or communications currently not possible.
