China has signalled its readiness to accept Korean reunification and is privately distancing itself from the North Korean regime, according to leaked US embassy cables that reveal senior Beijing figures regard their official ally as a "spoiled child".
News of the Chinese shift comes at a crucial juncture after the North's artillery bombardment of a South Korean island last week that killed four people and led both sides to threaten war. China has refused to condemn the North Korean action. But today Beijing appeared to bow to US pressure to help bring about a diplomatic solution, calling for "emergency consultations" and inviting a senior North Korean official to Beijing.

This certainly does not surprise me, but I am sure some here would be quite surprised.

The surprising part would be that China is ready to, "to accept Korean reunification ", under a capitalist, democratic government.
Runification? Yes. Reunification under anything less than a Communist--or socialist--government? I don't buy it.
Imo China will not tolerate Korean reunification if American troops remain on the Korean Peninsula.
Anything less than a dictatorship? maybe not. but the Politburo has become very fond of capitalism over the years. Deng Xiaping, 1980s - "To be rich is glorious."
Again I say it's a chance for Obama if he had a brain in his head he'd set up a secret meeting Kim Jong Il and someone other than Hillary and propose unification and allow Kim to take all the credit and being the hero to both North and south and allow his son to have a meaningful job in the Government and fold the North's Government into into the Souths, while either dismantling or reassigning and dispersing all of the Norths service members thinly in to the south's.
The president of the South would remain in office until the next election.
Obama would come off as if he knew something and the result would be everybody wins.
This kind of thing has to be done by someone with great negotiating skills and the ability gain peoples respect and trust.
I know there is a way to accomplish this and it only takes the will, and be able to set aside your ego and let others take the credit.
And unicorns exist and there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
That's like telling the Americans and the Taliban that they have alot in common and should really just become friends.
The North views the South as a traitor. There is no way in hell they will just shake hands and be friends.
Any takers on how long before North Korea tells China to go **** themselves?
Love these replies that say they're not surprised but then assert that China would insist on an NK reunification even though the OP is all about how China isn't gung-ho for the North Koreans. Keep'm coming.
Hrrm. I wonder if the communists are using wikileaks to throw us off?
You guys do know that the wikileaks only represent what the US thinks China thinks correct?

Uh, wrong.
China has expressed this privately according to the leaks.
