Two years ago, the pedophilia charge was confined almost entirely to QAnon, a sprawling web of far-right conspiracy theories that operated around the fringes of conservative politics. And while some of the details produced by its theories would find their way into the minds of Trump and his inner circle (especially with conspiracy theories centering on the “stolen election”), the broader narrative that American politics was a fight over pedophilia remained marginal.

The pretext for injecting the theme into the Jackson hearings was that, as a judge, she supposedly failed to sentence child predators sufficiently punitively. This conveniently allowed Republicans to waft the allegation of pedophilia under cover of questioning her tough-on-crime qualifications. ...The pedophilia charge has worked in Florida as a way for DeSantis to smear his critics and demonstrate dominance to the right-wing base. ...One irony of this debate is that if Democrats wanted to turn the issue against the Republicans, they would have a much richer fact pattern available to them. Trump, still the party’s effective leader, has been accused by five witnesses of walking in on undressed teenagers. The party’s former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, engaged in horrific sexual abuse of minors. Representative Jim Jordan helped cover up a sex-abuse scandal in college. More recently, Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore was credibly accused of sexuallly assaulting minors.

...The spread of this “issue” says nothing about the parties’ comparative permissiveness about sexual assault. It only reveals the existence within one of them of an openness to conspiracy theories and a network of operatives unprincipled enough to exploit it."

The problem with Republicans is that they take a few legitimately horrible, shocking stories and blow them way out of proportion and pretend that they are a giant national threat, and assume that Democrats are in favor of these sick and twisted stories; Some abusive parent somewhere who identifies as a liberal tries to forcibly change their child's gender identity, and it becomes ALL liberals are doing it. Some bigoted person who identifies as a liberal and who doesn't understand history or sociology says that all white people are bigoted against black people, claims it is CRT, and suddenly all schools are teaching this. A book depicting human sexuality is found in some primary school somewhere, and suddenly all Democrats want to sexualize children. Some illegal immigrant drug dealer rapes a white woman and suddenly ALL illegal immigrants are drug dealing rapists from shithole countries. (though some, I assume, are probably good people... haha...)

The reason it works is because Republicans tend to be uneducated, sheltered, and narrow-minded. Too many are simple-minded cowards who are easily frightened by someone repeating the same few terrible stories to them over and over again, and are easily convinced that these stories represent reality, and that the Republican Party is somehow capable of protecting them from this country full of "raging twisted leftists specifically targeting children and indoctrinating them with a bunch of sick and twisted ideas."

You can not promote gender confusion when a person's ordination or gender identity is fixed at birth. If reparative or conversation can not change an LGBT person into CIS and hetero then hetero and CIS kids cannot be made LGBT by story hour. I don't think that Republicans believe that these attacks actually convince people that their opponents are pedophiles. I don't think that's why they make these outrageous, slanderous claims. Rather, it is to rile up their rabid base, to give them a cause to go out and fight a war against people they regard as subhuman. Look at VanceMack's posts as an example. Do you think he regards any of you as a person just like him? No, he thinks you're subhuman scum and he takes to message boards to make that point clear.
