One of the Dem candidates said the quiet part out loud, in texts, multiple times, and doubled and tripled down on it. Apparently, other dems aren't bothered, and stand with this candidate, says nothing good about those dems who are standing with him.

It's beyond obvious that cities like Portland, OR are not "burning down," despite Trump's claims. So...why is he making the claim? What's the end game here?

I think Donald Trump is tgrying to convince Americans.....

1) That Blue states and cities are lawless and where insurrection and violent crime is the norm. There are no insurrentions in Portland or Chicago, and many Red cities in Red states have more violent crime per 100,000 residents. For example, 3 cities in Ohio have more violent crime per 100,000 residents than Chicago. But you don't and won't see Donald Trump sending the military to those Red cities. Trump wants Americans to believe his bs about Blue cities. So he sends hundreds of masked ICE agents to a city and they have orders to make things look as chaotic as possible. So they use flash-bangs, smoke grenades, and tear gas when the need for these actions is strictly performance theater. Don't be fooled.

2) Donald Trump wants federal troops and agents already in place in Blue cities prior to the 2026 midterm elections. I guarantee that on election night, Trump will claim that there exists major voting fraud in Blue cities and he has ordered voting stopped and voting machines confiscated. I have been an election voting judge for the past 3 presidential election cycles in a Blue state/city. There isn't any way to rig the machines. But Trump will claim there is. All paper ballots are tabulated digitally and saved for post-election audits or re-counts. When Trump claims election fraud, he is throwing shit at the wall and seeing if anything sticks. You'll notice no major election fraud occurs in the elections 2016/2024 where trump is victorious.

3) Trump likes to pretend he is a "strongman" along the lines of Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping. What he is actually doing is using US soldiers as political pawns and props. Trump learned a lot from The Apprentice. All of it was staged and fake. Nd one other thing. Trump's White House pressers with Karoline Leavitt are rigged. After the inauguration, Leavitt took control of the seating for pressers which has traditionally been the purview of the White House Press Corps. The trump White House also accredited "journalists" from the far right and assigned them seats at the very front. When Leavitt says next question and points, it is usually to a friendly far-right journalist who, she knows, won't ask tough questions. As a matter of fact, these far-right "journalists" ask leading questions that are designed to allow Leavitt an opportunity to talk about a subject near and dear to the Trump White House. For example, a question such as "Why are National Guard troops heading to Portland?" is a leading question that allows Leavitt to make all sorts of false claims about Portland. You get the idea. It's a dog and pony show. Skip White House pressers. They're worthless.

PS. ICE agents will detain anyone asking them a question(s) and being video-recorded. You can be detained for many days simply for asking a question that they don't like.

Ok this is the reality as I see it. First two points undeniable, the third pretty clear. The fourth my speculation.

1- In the past, NG troops were sent to cities when riots occurred, often sent with the encouragement of local officials, as local law enforcement needed help to cope. Cf. Watts, Rodney King, et al.
2- Now crime is down and local officials didn’t request help by and large, though one must presume that some are happy with the presence.
3- Trump pretty obviously has authoritarian instincts: his endorsement of torture, suggestion that the military commit war crimes, pardoning those convicted of those things, suggestions of military inauguration parades, obliviousness to some Constitutional safeguards. And of course, his apparent assumption that the traditional distance of the DOJ from the White House, made stronger post-Watergate, is to be ignored when he wants to. Witness the indictment of Comey, preceded by dismissal of those who didn’t think it justified.
4- Trump has real and potential problematic issues ahead: the oncoming effects of tariffs, Epstein files, next year’s elections. He is politically expert at distractions, large and small.

Trump’s policies have been a full-court press against every type of migrant: illegals, legals, asylum seekers and refugees, with the sole exception of a few White South Africans.
