For a political party that grasps the concept of victory against foreign enemies, Republicans can't seem to grasp that concept when it comes to domestic enemies. Instead of taking a page from Sun-tzu's "Art of War," when it comes to fighting liberals, American conservatives prefer the Jimmy Carter unconditional surrender strategy.
-Ann Coulter

So, what's the problem with the GOP? Why are they having so much trouble?

Too conervative? Too liberal? Not conervative enough? Not liberal enough?

Something else?

The thing that is "wrong" with them is that they are conservative, they are afraid to do anything that will make any changes, and change is a most fundamental part of everything.

Their problems have nothing to do with their ideology. Certain Republicans can do better by running to the left and certain Republicans can do better by running to the right, and that is fine.

Their problems stem from the fact that we have a president who supports an unwavering dogma. While it's certainly a good thing to have principles, it is simply not realistic for the President of the United States to continue supporting the same failed policies, time after time, regardless of current events. The voters (correctly) perceive the Bush Administration to be stacked full of demagogues rather than pragmatists.

The bigger problem as it relates to congressional Republicans (which is seemingly the opposite of the first), is that voters perceive Congress has ABANDONED all principles. The Republican Party, which came to power on a platform of less government, has expanded non-defense discretionary spending more in the last five years, than at any time since the Great Society. The gerrymandering of "safe" districts, and scandal after scandal after scandal have left the image of the GOP tarnished.

If the Republicans want to minimize their losses in 2006 (I don't think there is any way they can actually gain ground), they should do the following: 1) Make it clear that they do not agree with George Bush's foreign policy and will do everything in their power to undermine it, 2) Immediately pass some reforms to limit pork-barrel spending, 3) Clean house to weed out the most corrupt members of their party. If they do those things, I think they won't lose too badly in November, regardless of whether they move to the left or the right.

I think the GOP is failing on sercurity issues and illegal immigration. They have done little or nothing to combat the ivasion of illegals, some of them have even straight out encouraged it.They have done little or nothing to secure our borders. What sense does it make to have the patriot act, secret cia prisons and warrentless wire taps when the border is wide open and millions of people are illegally entering our country? All that stuff is meaningless if they are not going to secure our border, prevention should not be about waiting until they sneak our country and then spie on them, prevention should mostly be about keeping them from entering our country

I am also disatisfied with the way they spend money in a time of war, while billions are being spent on a war that we will have to pay back, they are also giving our money away to other countries and spending it on pork projects like it grows on ****en trees.

I've had it with the damn republicans. Today Frist and Reid agreed on an immigration bill that will probably pass the senate, allowing for a "path to citizenship" for alien immigration criminals.

Here's the complaint list of conservatives on Bush:

- A huge deficit, and it's got little to do with Iraq, but rather entitlements. For some unknown reason, he supported the zillion dollar Greedy Geezer meds deal, to appease an electoral group that STILL won't vote for him. Add to that failure on social security reform.

- Applauding the Olypianist USSC's reawakening of the frankenstein of anti-white discrimination, just when, after 25 years of effort, it looked like it was going to die.

- Failure to stop the illegal alien influx.

- Nothing on abortion.

- Nothing on the anti-religion jihad.

- Nothing on removing the detritus of previous farces like the department of education, amtrak, U.N. membership.

- Nothing but serving up old jokes like hydrogen-powered cars on the energy crisis.

Tell you what. If they don't turn it around, I will make an exception to my 5 year voting hiatus, and vote for Hillary. I may even work in the opponents campaigns for republican elected officials who abandoned the principles. Hell, if I'm going to have in effect a democrat, why not have a real democrat??

Because if the rest of the country winding up like Sanfransicko would be a bad thing if you "voted for a real democrat".Why not vote for a third party canidate if you dislike democrats and the republicans are acting like the democrats?

The GOP is just a bunch of white-coller criminals that are parasites to everything that is American. And their loyalties are with the WTO, not the USA. Their time is over. This country has had enough of their criminal, hypocritical, arrogant and intolerant leadership.

The GOP doesn't have anything to say anyone wants to hear anymore. They had their shot and they blew it!

See you guys when you post bail...

They are failing mainly because of the war in Iraq. It's going nowhere, and costing us lots.

The GOP is not conservative. True libertarians would be completely enraged at the modern GOP's claim of conservatism.

So every decision should based on getting the most votes?

Uh, no ..... that's what he foolishly tried to do. Ideally, decisions should be based on principle, but in a democracy they aren't. As the late Speaker Tip O'Neill used to say - the first rule of politics is to get elected. Democracy is inherently principle free.

They're just as corrupt, no more, no less, than the Democrats. What do you expect?

One can say that. Until one considers the reasons why they push the issues they do. Then one realizes that lack of personal integrity is the principal reason for the state of government and the world.

1) France takes bribes from Hussein, votes against intervention.
2) Bush sucks face with Sauid Prince, works against US energy independence.
3) Democrats bend over for fun with unions and socialists, sells out everyone.
4) Dems and Repubs find profit in breaking immigration law, America gets screwed in every orifice.

I don't agree with all of that, but you've made a good point that I never focussed on. I basically stand corrected.

I voted other. Simply because it's thier self greed and corruption for being in too much power that is the cause of there demise.
Conservatism = 0 progression. It should not be the use of political might but only as the brakes for too fast a progression. Science progressing too fast surpassing our ability to comprehend and control, conservatism. The opposite is true, you're only conservative, then your society becomes backwards looking.
All the religious heads, Abraham, Jesus, Mohhammed, that morman guy (well maybe not), Budda were all liberals. Their ideologies were radically different from the popularist thought of the time.

The American Liberal = Self-Proclaimed Elitist Spewing Marx and Mussolini = What They Want for the Future = What's Already Known to have Failed in the Past = what Jfuh thinks is a "Progressive"?

too funny.

The true "liberal", taking back it's original meaning, was "progressive" insofar as he was in favor of reducing the power of the state to control the lives of the individual. Most of the time, though, the rank and file "liberal" merely wanted to the government to leave him alone. "Don't Tread on Me" is a familiar and apt motto.

The modern liberal took the word "liberal", used the word "progressive" to describe the new oppression, and have been happily employing their little ideological mirror to every handy word in the dictionary ever since. The hammer and sickle beating down and cutting up the individual is a common icon of socialism/"liberalism"/"progressives".

I voted "other" because I think it's because they are merely rubber stamping the dishonesty being shown by the Bush Administration.

Hey, Pat Roberts? Where's the second part of the Intelligence Report?

Was it Pat Roberts or Oral Roberts [who saw a Baathist Liberal posing as a 900 foot Jesus in Tusla, Oklahoma] she was talking about? I'm so confused...

If we allow this to continue, then we get the government we deserve. They can't do anything unless we put them in office.

But you are right, they have let us down. Except for those who think that their constituents are corporate Americans rather than just Americans.
