Why is the average firearm owner, an unsafe gun owner?

You're in denial

Shooting incidents where 4 or more people were shot, not counting the shooter/shooters, in 2024:
USA = 586, UK = ONE
We haven’t had 500 mass smelting this century, so when you claim we had 584 in 2024 alone, you are lying. Why do you lie so often?

No, I am saying that you bought a gun thinking you had a right to kill with it.
Of course he has a right to kill with it. You, in New Zealand, have the same right to kill with a firearm.

Wish I'd spotted how @braindrain "debates" as quickly as you did. I let him run me around before I realised all he was saying was BS and not backing it up in any way. Same approach from @RF667799 - they won't dare touch statistics because that's an automatic lose for them.
Again it’s you that made the claim. Time for you to back it up. Sorry but I am not going to accept your rantings as truth with zero proof.

I get you are all butthurt that I don’t just take your word as the gospel but to bad.

And as I said, all you can do is deny.
Do you deny that among the pro gun crowd they do leave a gun loaded, ready and within easy reach. Despite the fact that they are ignoring the safety rules of storing a gun. Or is your reality such a fantasy that you simply deny that such safety rules exist.
Yes I deny your bs. And you have provided exactly zero to back up said bs. Which tells me I was right to deny your bs.

The pro gun crowd consists of millions of people. And just like in any crowd that large you can find just about any opinion your want. Doesn’t mean it is common or meaningful.

And sorry but I don’t care too much about the safety rules pushed by gun control zealots.

Neither of the two are here to debate. There mo is to put up brick walls in any way they can to stop any debate from happening. Simple minded reasoning of if there is no debate on the subject then nothing changes which means they get to keep their guns and the right to be stupid with a gun. At best I will give them a few poststo prove my observation and then ignore their obviousw attempts to obfuscate.
Yes how dare we not just accept your bs as fact. The audacity.

Seeing you all butthurt because people don’t just take your BS as fact is hilarious.

Maybe try backing up your BS for a change.

With all due respect, you haven't the slightest clue who here on DP owns guns, let alone how, or what they know about gun safety.

Frankly, it's insulting to have someone like you presume to know what you've claimed here about gun owners on DP. You've been here what, less than a year and a half?

Moreover, your bias against guns is CLEARLY the motive for this thread - and nothing else.

You "safely use firearms by not having any in your household." Profound, simply profound.

Hi, I've asked multiple gun owners on DP how they store their firearms. Not a single one keeps their firearms separate from their ammo. I've been asking this question for awhile now. There's nothing else to do. Gun owners I've asked, don't know how to do something as simple as store their firearms safely.

The observable results are less than 500 fatalities per year per 100 million or more gun owners.

Your "odds" are nothing more than a story based on opinion.

And? Please compare to that rate to the rate of deaths from other countries and get back to me.

1. They do not store their firearms safely. It's estimated more than half of gun owners do not properly store their firearms in a locked safe when not in use.

If a gun is in a locked safe it is useless for home defenense.
2. They do not store their ammo separately from their firearms when not in use.
If you do that the gun is not useful for home defense.

Raises hand.... those three points all fall under "training" that I have constantly talked about here. (And been taken to task over repeatedly by certain US based gun fans)

When it comes to guns and gun control - there are three opinions.
  • Anti-gun (obvious what that is)
  • American Pro -Gun - (will take issue with almost anything said by someone who is not an American gun-fan - whether that person is pro-gun or not)
  • Rest of World Pro-Gun - especially those who live in countries where you have to demonstrate safe practice and take yearly tests / training.
I usually find on these threads if I don't subscribe to guns, guns and more guns with guns on top and the less training and safety concern taken over gun ownership: then I'm a "commie ant-gun leftist."

I get that impression as well. I don't think most of the people who are American Pro-gun here really can think about the things they're saying. Like for example, they're saying that despite tens thousands of people dead from firearms, because there are a lot of them it makes the deaths insignificant. Or that they need a gun for self defense. I am curious if you have any ideas or points about this.

It actually wouldn't matter if they're "safe" or not

There were 586 mass shootings in the USA in 2024. That alone justifies gun control.

But that's the thing. I want to know why gun owners think they're safe with firearms, when there are strong reasons to think the average gun owner is not safe with their firearms.

Sorry but I could not care less about the “safety standards” dreamed up by the gun control zealots.

There is nothing unsafe about storing ammo in my gun safe right next to my firearms.

You can keep pretending all you like but it won’t change reality.

It’s shows that your claim that the average gun owners is unsafe to be nothing more then the normal bs you spew on this site.

See like this reaction is what I mean. Why did you say "I could not care less about the safety standards dreamed up by the gun control zealots". If anything it kinda comes across not as a debate point, but a defensive reaction. Like you don't want to open yourself up to uncomfortable ideas.

Can you define what "home defense" is?
Shooting somone who is a threat to you in your home.

I think some of what you said is true, and I think the majority of American gun owners would probably be better without them.

But I can only speak for myself.

I am a rural land owner.

The response time from a 911 call is estimated by insurance companies at about 35 - 45 minutes.

Dogs are the best home defense But It would be negligent not to have a loaded 12 gauge behind the door as well.

That said, I think most suburban Americans own guns because they think it's cool, or are making a cultural/political statement and they would probably be better off without them.

Right. So when you think home defense, I want you to name what you think is the number one threat that would qualify as "home defense". I think I know your answer, but I am curious what you think the answer is.

The fact that there are so very few accidental fatalities from firearms shows your claim that the average gun owner is unsafe to be nothing more then dishonest bs posted by a poster with a history of posting just such nonsense.

Please see above.
That nonsense is just as dumb as the first time you posted it.

Just because some gun control zealots pretend ammo needs to be stored separately from firearms doesn’t make it true.

But then when has the gun control side ever worried about the truth.

Tweakers around here.

(Not counting things like defending the chickens from raccoons and bobcats, which doesn't really count as home defense).

Also mountain lions, which I see a few times year. A mountain lion will usually give people a wide birth, but they kill people once in a while.....making it worth while to be armed when out aline on the property to prove t yourself and your dogs

Accidental fatalities are preventable fatalities. Accidental injuries are preventable injuries. I won't lie, the post comes across moreso as not being able to make a cognizant point on guns.
