that when certain mayors need to trim their budgets from overspending on useless new multi-million dollar baseball parks for a city that has no real baseball team, the first place they cut is libraries and swimming pools. Then they can't seem to figure out how to keep kids off the streets and from getting into trouble. It's so frustrating sometimes the level of stupidity that comes from supposedly educated adults. Is common sense dead in the political arena or what is it that keeps these people from seeing the real picture? It's just ****ing bull****!

/rant off.

Are you referring to St. Petersburg, FL and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, or Clearwater, FL and the Clearwater Threshers? o.O

neither- Omaha, NE and the -no team- just a stadium to appease the NCAA to keep the CWS here for one week a year.

Sometimes trimming libraries makes sense. Philly had more libraries per capita then any other city in the nation, and yet when the mayor tried to cut them due to the budget crisis everyone was up in arms.

So he ended up cutting the fire department more then the libraries.

The fire department, as well as FIGHTING FIRES, employs thousands of people.

for political purposes of course.

When politicians want more money, the best way to send a message is to cut back on programs that nearly everyone agrees with.

Here in Cincinnati we were going to close half the swimming pools, but after public outcry we decided to keep all the pools open, and trim the police and fire budget...

A telling microcosm of American stupidity.

Simple.

The kids that go swimming, aren't the same 10 yr olds that do driveby shootings Saturday nights.

Just saying.

Give them a couple years. They just arrested a 12 year old over the weekend for a shooting.

And besides who said that those were the same people anyway?

The politicians cut the services you want instead of the services that need cutting because they KNOW that the average American is soooo stupid he'll never figure out that he's being manipulated.

I went to the beach yesterday. Los Angeles County has stopped cleaning up the weeds that drift onto the beach, and as a result these annoying flies are everywhere. Are the beaches one of the budget areas that showed exponential growth in the last two decades? No, but they've been cleaning the beaches regularly all the time I've been here.

Are they cutting the areas that grew exponentially over the last two decades, the areas that busted California's budget? No, they're cutting nickels here and dimes there in the places the California voter is going to see, instead, and avoid cutting the areas that need cutting in the hopes that the annoying hordes of flies will force the Californians opposed to higher taxes either out of state or change their mind.

It's all a game, and the politicians are masters at it.

Libraries get cut because they're visible.

It's that simple.

I think that describes a lot of cities. My city built a multimillion dollar arena(BOK arena) in the most deadest and most property landlocked section of town as a means of trying to revive it and they also decided to build a base ball stadium in the dead section of town when we have a perfectly good baseball stadium in another part of town. Then they decided to give a lot of the streets and sidewalks in this dead section of town a cosmetic appearance. Now city workers like policemen, firemen and other city workers are having to take furlough days.
