I disagree that Trump's calling for the death penalty might possibly help the defense.

One of the first questions in voir dire will be if the juror has heard the president calling for the death penalty for Robinson. The Judge can do this from the bench. If the juror states that he or she heard the president calling for the death penalty, then that prospective juror would be thanked, and excused.

The defense would not need to waste any of their allotted voir dire excusals because of what Trump said about wanting the death penalty.

Legal experts on TV disagree with you. The death penalty could be challenged prior to trial based on his comments. Long before there is a jury in place. The inference of his remarks is that he guilty which contravenes the innocent until .......stuff. He needs to shut up.

I would highly recommend getting more familiar with the Nazis rise to power. They didn’t jump straight to the Reichstag fire and the Enabling Acts. There was a national incident with the fire. Whether the Nazis set it, or just used it, they did use the emotions from incident to get the country to hate who they wanted - and to make them their champion, and to allow them to do what they wanted, which was to seize absolute power.

That's a direct analogy. trump wants to be an authoritarian leader, and for him and the Republicans to overcome our democratic barriers against that - institutions, the rule of law, etc. He's largely gutted our institutions and has an ongoing war on them. He immediately used this incident to say he will attack all of his political opposition broadly, with his minions calling for the same.

If an incident doesn't occur for them to use, they sometimes manufacture one. For example, trump claimed an emergency of Canadian Fentanyl to seize power, he claimed Los Angeles was being destroyed by riots, Washington DC had an emergecny of crime, to seize other power, and so on.

The right-wing leaders are nearly all calling for "war" by trump against his political opponents, exploiting this incident to get support to do that.

The difference is the Nazis themselves set the Reichstag on fire to create a national crisis that they could blame on the Communists (and actually did a really bad job with the whole blame game, Goebbels was not yet on his a- game when they did it).

IMO, It's not over the top. Charlie Kirk was an American icon who cherished our country and did his best to inform young people about the perils of neo-Marxism, and he was highly successful in that endeavor.

I saw his murder.
It was horrific.

But let's not cast Kirk as a constitutionally minded son of liberty.

One book I'd suggest for some info on it is "Hitlerland", which reports the history of American witnesses in Germany to the rise. And to be honest, I'm not that interested in a lot of detail. Same here. I'm alone and had to call somebody right after I saw it. It's a different kind of gruesome. I've seen planes crash at the air races and an attempt at a speed record on water go tragically wrong. They were both horrible things to witness live, but watching Charlie Kirk's neck explode had an entirely different effect.

I don't have words to describe it. It wasn't horrifying. Horror has an element of thought. This was a basal reaction rooted in ancient instinct. And I didn't see it live.

The closest thing I remember to this feeling was seeing bodies falling from the World Trade Center on 9/11.
