In the last few weeks we've dealt with a lot of junk - left and right (as a family - or our friends, extended family have had problems). Things have been rough for everyone it seems.

Numerous people, in regard to several completely different situations, have suggested that 'maybe he needs to go to church' or 'maybe I need to take her to church.' . . .in regard to these situations that have come up (everything from health problems to school issues for kids)

Why do people consider church attendance or religious practice to be a 'problem solver' or a 'benefit' - something to engage in in response to issues?

It does provide emotional support to people in troubling times. And is often an excellent source of charity.

Usually if folks were not brought up as regular church goers, they turn to it as a last resort. Stuck in life with no answers. Unfortunately they wll just replace it with whatever addiction they had. If nothing else a better addiction?

Don't get too angry. They mean well.... perhaps some of them are saying this, because they don't know what else to say, and are hopeful that either some councelor at church may be able to help, or that God will intervene for you.

Often, when someone has serious troubles and I have NO CLUE what to advise them, I just say something like "I am so sorry; I'll pray for you." (And I do, too.) For some of us it is a normal thing, when we don't know where else to turn, to turn to God.
