Social Security.
Millions of Americans use it and depend on it.it is one of the most successful government programs ever.
It needs to be adjusted to accommodate demographic changes. Not a surprise, we’ve known this for a long time.
Ronald Reagan fixed it when an adjustment was needed.
Trump and some GOPers want to tear it all down.
He has fired thousands of workers there and closed offices. To what end is unclear.
Why not just fix it?

Trade.
This was not a problem that needed to be fixed.
Upending the norms of global trade has not changed any of the fundamentals of trade.
It has simply cost us money, and more importantly - allies.
We are less trusted and less respected around the world as a direct result of trump’s yo-yo tariffs.
Rather than encouraging investment here, we have encouraged companies to seek better stability elsewhere.

Government waste.
Sure, we all imagine there is waste in government. There surely is some.
Finding it and fixing it takes time and effort. That’s part of Congress’ oversight responsibility.
Instead, Trump presides over massive cuts, layoffs, and closures, enabled by wealthy individuals outside of government.
That is not “improving efficiency”, it is just cutting, as in with an axe. No plan.
But Elon got things he wanted - including having the president advertise his cars on the White House lawn.
Now we wonder what’s important functions are not being done properly - or at all. Trump has no idea.
We will be feeling the effects of this mindless destruction for a very long time.

There’s a long list of things that we *should* be working to fix or improve,
Trump and GOP currently hold all three branches of government to a significant degree.
Shouldn’t they be able to fix something?
Why can’t they fix anything?

Fixing problems that basically barely exist is a specialty of republicans. Like fixing Flint's drinking water when there was nothing wrong with it, until they 'fixed' it. The office of government is 'fixing' America by laying off thousands of people with a sledgehammer claiming they are saving us from waste, fraud and abuse, which I agree with but not from the people who keep the government running, it's from this administration and our bloated military budget.

Is the GOP going to fix our Miranda rights next?

I suspect government waste is primarily a myth, although I hear the Defense Dept is boondoggle city.

I'm sure there's waste, but this isn't a good faith effort to find it.

I'll also speculate that most of you worst waste happens at the state and local level, like the CA high speed rails we've already paid for.

Trump "fixed" any problems (real and/or imagined) with Air Force One.

He simply accepted an emollument (bribe) from the family that runs Qatari for a brand new luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet.

The MAGA worldview is diametrically opposed to reality. They believe that actual problems are not problems (therefore making real problems worse), and imagine things that AREN'T problems to be problems.

Therefore everything they do is either failing to address an existing problem (or making them worse), or creating problems where none exist (trade wars, imperialist desire to annex Greenland and Panama for no particular reason, anti DEI bullshit which is really just turbocharged white supremacy, mass deportations)

. . . Government waste.
Sure, we all imagine there is waste in government. There surely is some.
Agreed.
Finding it and fixing it takes time and effort. That’s part of Congress’ oversight responsibility.
Agreed. Sadly, Congress shirks this responsibility, and consequently there's a lot of waste and fraud within government. Trump's job as president is to address these things. Congress has shown tremendous incompetence, so Trump created DOGE to do the job Congress can't (or won't).

They ARE fixing stuff. (The tariffs are really dumb - we agree on that.)

They can't fix anything because of TDS. Even when good things happen, TDS narrates the opposite.

The irony is when someone actually pulls it off the whiners will still whine.

MAGA does not live in the real world. They have this virtual reality headset on showing them Fox News and Trump lies, and they operate in that virtual reality world- with the consequence that they get themselves hurt here in the real world. The problem is they take us along on their ride as well.

Just look at border security. The utter failure by the left and the best job ever done by Trump and the republicans. Just unbelievable.
The only thing holding the republicans and Trump back are the democrats doing everything they can to undermine progress. That is a fact.
Seems like we just got cheaper prescription drugs.
There is a tax cut for the hard working poor and SS being held back by the left.
Looks like tariffs are going to bring long term industry back to our country. It is time we started making products instead of putting our vital industries out of business by importing Chinese products. Making China great is no longer the focus of our government. That in itself is what the American people want. I can't wait to see what they accomplish next. Clearly we are headed in the right direction.
Tossing criminals here illegally out of this country committing crimes and terrorizing our citizens while opening a door for law abiding legal immigration. Wow 2 steps forward in my opinion. Hopefully the left will get behind this as well and abandon the criminals first policies they seem to support.

The right has only ever been against things for decades now. Since Reagan and his poisonous "the government is the problem" lie. They don't remember what it's like to be for something.

And how can you possibly fix existing government things if all you know is how to be against government things?

There are a few factors here.

1) Fixing stuff is hard. Like.... really, really hard. Even if you have a competent team and lots of resources, fixing something like "reducing waste in the federal government" takes years, and results in far less change than you think.

For example, Clinton had a long, good-faith effort to get rid of waste in the federal government, and did it the right way -- they took time to figure out what could be cut. They reduced the federal workforce significantly, but didn't save a lot of money.

2) The Trump administration isn't hiring competent people. It's firing them, and installing corrupt, incompetent toadies who will do whatever Dear Leader tells them to do.

3) The goal of the Trump administration isn't to fix problems. Their real goals are:
- Destroy the federal government.
- Stop the federal government from actually helping anyone, especially minorities, poor, women etc.
- Funnel as much money as possible to the Trump family.
- Make sure a firehose of attention is trained on Donny Boy at all times.

4) Regressives have said for years and years that government is "inefficient." But when you put people into political positions who dogmatically refuse to accept the basic premise that government can be reasonably effective, guess what happens? They do a shit job.

5) Regressives are refusing to hold Republicans accountable when they fail. They have completely bailed on the whole concept of holding Republicans accountable for their actions and failures. They're too busy rooting for their team, and demanding that they Pwn Teh Libz, to care when Republicans do things that harm their own constituents.

Maybe this will change when the current administration does so much damage that even MAGApies notice, but I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe he doesn't want to fix it.

There's been speculation around here that the true purpose behind Mush & his DOGE shit posse's raid on the SSA was to crap it up so bad that he, Trump & the MAGA Wing in Congress could point at it at say "Look! It stinks! We need to get rid of it!" and justify replacing it with something worse.

Trump no doubt wanted instant results to show the public.
"Hey look y'all! I cut such and such amount of money in no time! I'm the 'can-do' guy!"

He and his Mini-Me Mush & his DOGE shit didn't care who it hurt, killed or completely inconvenienced. Just as long as Trump could quickly put a checkmark next to "Cut gov't waste/saved billions".

That will probably cost taxpayers millions to refurbish & make the Secret Service happy in the way of security measures.

Yep. DOGE shit is making sure those pesky regulators don't bother Mush & his businesses.
