More than a quarter of the US States were added AFTER 1865 (the end of the US Civil War). Firearms are necessary to tame the wilderness and those who live there. They are necessary to provide food and protection away from areas of centralized Government. The people who came to this country while it was still growing through it's creation, infancy, and development were largely interested in Individual/Personal Responisibility rather than expecting the Government to defend them constantly.

Gun ownership, once a necessity of daily life has grown into an American tradition. People like myself can trace our roots in this country back through the blood of our ancestors who fought and died for this country as it grew. They fought to preserve a way of life that is rapidly disappearing in the United States. Part of that way of life is responsible gun ownership and the ability to defend oneself. When asked why the Japanese had never tried to invade the West Coast of the United States, Admiral Yamamoto is quoted as saying.... "In America there is a rifle behind every blade of grass." This from a man whose own military was training women and children to wield bamboo canes against expected American GIs if/when the Home Islands were invaded.

but the question is if you are ok with the fact that you are located in a much more hostile inviroment because the fact you want to let civilians(and therfore gangs) to have guns

and i belive the reason for that is that gangs got guns
in europe and israel i never seen a thing called "gang" or people with guns
only mafia and things like that,but again they had like pistols and not machine guns and grenades

It seems like you have only been to small countries and not big ones. I think it is also a matter of perspective. The US has been based on the idea of restricting the power of government rather than restricting the rights of individuals.

i feel 100 times more safe knowing that nobody in my city have guns in their hous(unless they are security guards)

Safety for a lot of Americans is NOT the province of government but of ourselves. By the way here in the US we tend to criminalize more things than the rest of the world hence the crime statistics.

Homicide is dropping in the US even as gun ownership and the total population are increasing. You may feel that a knife offers adaquate personal pretection yet many prefer not to let dangerous criminals get that close to them if at all possible. One must also understand that making things illegal, such as a nationawide ban on many recreational drugs, does not make them rare. If someone has so little regard for human life as to commit murder then they are very unlikely to be deterred by a gun ban.

The allowance of devices for personal protection in society is always a double-edged sword. That's why many of the monarchies of Europe, including England did not allow for private ownership of weapons - it made civilians too much of a threat to the Monarchy. Here in the United States, the ideal was to place our faith in the People, not in the Government. Yes, that does create a situation in which the bad guys have as much (and often more) firepower than the good guys. That's a fact of life.

The fix for this is creating a situation where the criminal element is not allowed to exist in significant enough number in society for it to be an issue. THAT is where the United States Government and People fail on a daily basis.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I feel a need ro respond to it.....

Gange in the US largely exist due to the ethnic immigration waves throughout the 20th Century. These groups formed to protect themselves from the previously immigrated ethnic groups and then as a means to "control" the next ethnic group.

The "arms race" you see in the criminal element has lagely to do with the availability of the same tools to the civilian population, law enforcement, and other gangs. A crook with a knife may be a threat to someone who is unarmed, but it's not going to do much to frighten me when I'm carrying a handgun.
