Why are Republican voters so easily suckered?

Honest question. Republican politicians know their base is easily suckered, they prey on their inability to navigate complicated concepts, they prey on their cultural fears, and they know they'll believe most of the rubbish they pedal if they just say it enough. The lies are so egregious and ridiculous that it doesn't seem like they're even trying to craft clever deception. Trump is able to confidently say stuff like, 'If we didn't test, there wouldn't be a COVID problem' and get applause. I would expect better arguments from an ostrich that has been hit in the head with a sledge hammer. Yet, people are still willing to believe him and trust him.

In addition... what have Republicans been right about in the past 40 years? I can't think of a single big issue they've been on the right side of in my lifetime. You'd think the well of trust would be poisoned by now. I couldn't stand being wrong so consistently, and I certainly won't trust someone who led me down that path over and over and over again.

If anything, I would say Republicans were ‘easily suckered’ by a non-conservative, questionable Christian, and ethical disaster in Trump. And I do contend that Trump has hijacked the Republican Party to the point of irreparable damage.

But overall it is not very reasonable to say that Republicanism, or Conservatism, has gotten everything wrong for 40 years (your contention.) Understand I am liberal, classical liberal at that, but I would not be willing to go so far as to claim the entire ideology is never right.

That is your ship to sail, and explain far better than your OP tried to do.

Well aside from the fact that I'd argue both choices, and never mind that the list of presidents in the past 40 years is pretty short, I think we should stick to modern incarnations of the GOP, which has changed rapidly since the 2000s and has exhausted every brand of conservatism within the Republican tent without finding one that works and isn't a pure con job.

The biggest problem is where they get their news from. You can't listen to Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones, Ben Shapiro, Fox Noise most of the time and still come away with any sense of a true reality.
Speaking personally, this progressive (at least) tries to check just about every story to make sure that somebody isn't blowing smoke up my ass. It's hard sometimes to hold-on to a feeling/thought, only to find out that what you felt is not true. Take Bill Clinton. Thought he was one thing..turned out that many people were mistaken, as far as his actions.. Don't hate him, just thought he could have been much better.

The GOP, this century has been detrimental to our way of life. The current manifestation, Trumpism, could very well end Democracy here.

Yes, Ray-Gun created big debt but we needed much of the change AT THE TIME. That the direction was never adjusted is a big mistake.

Gladly. It's because Democrats are in large part corporate hacks who slow-walk progress and addressing issues critical to voters to maintain their funding. They believe that centrism will peel off Republicans (it won't) while keeping their base appeased and locked down. It worked for a little while, but it's clear voters are fed up. That's why Dems lost so badly in 2010 and haven't recovered since. Republicans are able to excite their base by preying upon weaknesses (see my OP), even on issues like Obamacare, which was basically a repacked Republican plan from the 1990s. Democrats are generally weak, strategically stupid at the leadership level, and try to sabotage aspects of their coalition that have actual solutions. In addition, left-leaning votes are more skeptical of broken promises. Forming a consensus coalition is far more difficult for Democrats.

If Democrats ran on the issues with actual solutions (e.g. not half-way-to-bad solutions based on conservative anti-think), they'd have a lock on virtually every race. There simply aren't enough Republican voters to win elections without Dems blowing it consistently.
