(CNN) Madison police and the FBI have launched a hate crime investigation after an 18-year-old biracial woman was set on fire.

The assault took place early Wednesday morning when the woman was driving and stopped at a red light and "heard someone yell out a racial epithet," according to a police incident report.
The woman is not named in the report, but a family spokesperson identified her as Althea Bernstein, a college student and a volunteer EMT.

"She looked and saw four men, all white. She says one used a spray bottle to deploy a liquid on her face and neck, and then threw a flaming lighter at her, causing the liquid to ignite," read the report, which was filed over the phone.

Sheesh

i hope this isn't true.

A woman had her face set on fire, you should be ashamed of yourself, even your dead grandmother (if she's dead) should be ashamed of you. How could you stoop so low?

Because I've seen the photos. She has a couple of scuffs on her face.

Sheesh

And yet people on this forum will continue to their last breath that there's no deep-seated racism in this country and even if there were, it's their 'right'.

Before y'all hurt something by patting yourselves on the back over this you might want to hold off for a few days. There are some REALLY fishy parts to this story.

I've got a suggestion, try hosing down a block of wood or a rock or something with lighter fluid and then try lighting it by throwing lit matches or something similar at it. See how much lighter fluid and how many attempts to light it that takes.

She says they threw a lighter at her after soaking her. The only lighter commonly available that stays lit is a Zippo and they aren't all that common these days. Besides, if that's what the guys did then there should be a lighter in the car as evidence.

She says she was lit on fire then went home and told her mother. I mean, maybe that's the way it went down but 911 and hospital were also options.

I have heard no corroborating stories about this. If these guys were hanging out on a street corner just waiting for a racial minority to come wheeling by so that they could light him or her on fire then somebody else should have seen them.

I won't go so far as to say that this woman isn't 100% truthful but we are DEFINITELY missing some details that would serve to further validate her claims.

If I may be allowed- this is a burn victim:

Cops are looking into it, searching for witnesses and video footage. Time will tell.

Yes .. the is the appropriate course of action. Far too often, we have people jumping to conclusions and rushing to judgement before the facts are identified and communicated.

It sounds made up, but you never know.

Yeah, time will tell. Not yet. Not after the 45 yrs of Madison, WI, incident I've known. Not after the entire history of our existence in this land since before we were America and since becoming America. Yeah, somebody out there tell me that.
