my*Wife has a few white friends. Like extra white. Extremely white.
Since we had kids they have made it a point to always call themselves “tia”
Is this that cultural appropriation **** cuz it’s annoying as ****
Honestly, I don't see the big deal with cultural appropriation. If someone appreciates, and/or is enamored by someone's culture enough to try to be like it, then what is the big deal?
Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
With all that's going on in the world today, I swear, people get offended way too easily.
Are the brits closer to cheese eating surrender monkey's or to the pillaging Swedes?
Not me. Many from south and central America, the Caribbean, but not directly from Spain.
Here's a tidbit for you, before Rollins and Black Flag, there was another band in the late 60's called Black Flag. But they were named after the bug spray. and were doing heavy metal before there was heavy metal. They lasted about 9 months, caught some underground radio play and disappeared into the obscure oblivion of forgotten bands from Texas. The lead guitarist, Paul Frenke recently made news in Germany. He and a compatriot, living in a German nursing home, escaped and were discovered dancing on stage at German Heavy Metal Festival three days into the festivities. The two escapees demanded of the social service restrainers who were returning them to the nursing home, for more and better beer, where could they cop some lsd not cut with speed, for peyote buttons and mushrooms, man?
I once owned a promo copy of their one and only unreleased album. Truly, it sucked.
I probably shouldn't cause I sound like a freakin' gringo (so sayeth my Spanish wife who is whiter than white as is the rest of her family btw)
As someone bilingual and half 'white'/half Mexican... it doesn't matter in my family or with friends. My daughter calls my 'extra white' friends tia and I never thought twice about it.
I also saw some white girl got blasted for singing a tribute Selena spanish song in Texas... like lighten up people. There's also some kid from the Netherlands who sings awesome tejano music. Most people appreciate it but some have to try and ruin it by claiming cultural appropriation too.
Most tejano music was greatly influenced by German and Polish music, specifically polkas and waltzes. That's where the accordions came from, along with violins and the yodeling. All those German and Polish immigrants offered a bounty to settle in the northern Mexican provinces, including Texas.
When I first met my in-laws I took them to a Polish festival and they were astonished like "It's sounds just Mexican music!" I'm like yup that's polka for you.

How is someone EXTRA or EXTREMELY white?
This sounds more of a racial issue with you rather than them.
It seems EXTRA and EXTREMELY white people bother you.

Who cares. What does it matter?
It matters and it doesn’t. From what I have read there is a justifiable core rationale for the sense of appropriation, which, naturally produces some silly complaints on the one hand from the culture that feels ripped off, which naturally produces some pretending-not-to-understand counter complaints from the other side. There may have been some justification for Boston naming its baseball team the Braves, if they were referring to the folks dressed like Indians at the tea party, but that’s a far cry from the idiotic chant and chop that appeared in Atlanta years later.
Black people invented jazz, (tho some New Orleans Italians claimed they did back in the day). Did Dave Brubeck steal the culture? No more than certain Spanish flamenco songs rip off Arabic chants. Someone complained a while ago about college folks dressed up as Mexican revolutionaries with big hats for some costume party. Check out the pictures of Villa and Zapata. Even more, when Mexico hosted the World Cup in modern times, their logo was a boy with a soccer ball wearing, you guessed it, a big hat.
The issue is complex. Which naturally means it will produce simplistic arguments. Go figure.
