Which was worse... 9/11 or hurricane Katrina?

"Worse" in what sense?

In terms of lives lost - 9/11
In terms of financial damage - Katrina
In terms of governmental incompetence in the immediate reaction - Katrina
In terms of governmental incompetence to prevent it from happening again - 9/11 (by a nose)
In terms of the effect on the American psyche - 9/11
In terms of the number of people directly affected by it - Katrina
In terms of gasoline price spikes - Katrina

In terms of failure of government? Katrina.
Why? Because Katrina was after 9/11 and the government should've become far more "compitent" in dealing with disasters. Yet the opposite proved true.
What's worse? You see a hurricane long long before it "lands"; yet even with reliable intel it is still quite difficult to avert various terrorist attacks.

I'd agree with the others it depends on what you mean by "worse."

However I'd personally view 9/11 as worse as it was the result of senseless violence.

9/11

Katrina was destruction caused by a natural disaster. 9/11 was a disaster created by men. Katrina's suffering related to the incompetence of men to deal with the problem. 9/11's suffering was the result of man's inherent evil being unleashed, his capacity to slaughter. Put another way, nature created the hurricane and man failed deal with it, men created 9/11, we never should have had to deal with it.

9/11 was worse because it forces us to confront the duality of the human condition. The capacity for hatred of the 9/11 hijackers is a part of all of us as human beings, it's hardwired in there, we just have to keep it under control. They showed us what men are capable of, and that's more intimidating than anything nature can throw a us.

I'm iffy with the lives lost portion, why? Because having your home demolished and unable to recover because you were bailed on pretty much has destroyed your life.

Yeah having your home destroyed sucks but it doesn't compare to actually being dead in my opinion.

See what the real question is what kind of asshole decides to compare national tragedies to each other

"The only stupid question is the question not asked."

There's nothing azzholeish about asking this question.

actually, yeah there is. Why the **** would you compare national tragedies, like football teams in the tabloids before games?

this is a stupid rant on your part. this is a discussion board. I realize the left sometimes hates the concept of the free market of ideas* but your attack on the original poster is violative of the spirit of a board like this. Its a fair question-if you don't like it, don't participate in the discussion but stuff the insults.

Well, this mod is in total agreement with you.

Thank you everyone who can see that this is a legitimate question... The reason I posted it is because I have heard people say that each is worse than the other.

In my opinion, I think 9/11 was far worse because of the loss of life and the fact that it was not a natural dissaster.

agreed, and while I am hesitant to assign blame to any of the victims, those in the WTC are completely blameless compared to people who built on a floodplain below sea level and did not evacuate when told to do so

Too examine the data and receive opinion, of coarse.

The government cant be expected to protect us from natural disasters. Sure with modern technology we can see hurricaines days in advance.....but IMO, its just not the governments responsibility to protect us from things they cant foretell, and things we as intelligent human beings should have enough sense to get out of the way of.

the public had just as much warning of the hurricaine as the government did.

However, I believe it is the governments duty to protect us from enemies. Thats why I pay taxes. If we cant count on the government to do it, then we should damn well be allowed to do it ourselves.

In short, I guess I am saying that the effects of Katrina were partly the fault of idiotic people that didnt have enough sense to catch a greyhound out of town.

If you are someone with no access to a TV or radio......then forgive me.

The 9-11 disaster had nothing to do with any screw up by the public. it was 100% totally and completely the result of government innaction.

Surely you have to contribute a portion of that percentage to Al Queda, no?

I believe the gov't could have prevented Waco. I believe they could have prevented Ruby Ridge. They could have prevented the Cole is they were on their guard. But 9/11 was just a matter of time and hindsite is 20/20. We got sucker punched.

There's enough blame to go around though, that's for sure. Nobody's perfect. But instead of looking behind to point fingers we should look ahead with lessons learned from behind.

yeah and what I said was part of the free market of ideas. Personally, I think it's a little low to be comparing national disasters, one which I've experience first hand. It's hard to explain, but yeah okay I'll admit my reaction may have been OD and I apologize for that.

The reason I chose to ignore your post and respond to Jerry's before is that you used the word 'legitimate'. That's funny coming from you since you are not legit because you say dumb **** like, "I know it's typical of the left..."

I hardly think someone who identifies with a political movement that enslaves millions and kills even more is in a position to decide what is legitimate:roll:

absolutely.

I was just limiting my choices to government/public for the sake of my argument.

but certainly, AQ is the main one to blame.

as far as the rest of your post goes......100% agreed.

not what I was doing. I think I've gone over this with you on other threads already about why your mindless rhetoric is wrong, and why it is actually your beliefs that support such ideas. But of course, why would you listen when you can just spew the same **** over and over...
