It matters a lot. Trump has pulled out of over 11 world organizations and cut funding to several countries. He has ended friendships that took years to establish. The problem is China. They have been bidding for that position for years and Trump has just opened the door for them to become the world's new superpower. They have already started to take those spots, and the EU preventing Americans to travel there is a glimpse of what's to come.
