I’d be fine with a consensus candidate or speaker. But we just had a house where the democrats held a 222-213 advantage which was the same as the Republicans now having their 222-212 advantage, 1 vacancy. If the Democrats want a deal and a consensus speaker why didn’t they do it in 2020, it was almost 50-50 then. Why not a power sharing agreement in the senate with the 50-50 tie in 2020? In the last 50-50 tie, there was a power sharing agreement reached between party leaders Lott and Daschle.

I figure the power sharing agreement which happened in 2001 in the senate was before today’s modern political era set in of polarization, the great divide, the super, mega, ultra-high partisanship. 2001 was in a political era more akin to compromise, playing the old game of give and take, working across the aisle whenever possible. Now both major parties want to burn the other at the stake, destroy them completely for one party rule from here to eternity. Both want no opposition, just complete control.
If the democrats, in the house and in the senate didn’t follow Lott’s and Daschle’s example in 2020, why should the Republicans do so today? The problem is both partiy leaders has become party firsters in first Reid and McConnell, now Schumer, Pelosi and Hastert, followed by Boehmer, who wanted to work with Obama, the Republican house members wouldn’t let him and he resigned. Then Ryan and now McCarthy etc. Party first, nation somewhere further down the line. Both major parties only govern for their base, not all of America or the remaining 70% as each party’s base is around 30% of the electorate.
Sure, I’d like to see a consensus speaker. It won’t happen. The democrats could have had one in 2020 to lead the way in an almost 50-50 house and in an 50-50 senate following Lott’s and Daschle’s example.
