Now that's just flat out not cool. You should thank God every day that the ACLU exists! The ACLU is what protects you from the government, because the government has a tendency to go for what's easiest (and typically less effective), which is to just get rid of your civil liberties. You should get down on your knees and thank christ that God put some people in this nation willing to fight to save your freedom, regardless of your bashing them!

Thank you! I was wondering if anyone was going to speak up (again) for the ACLU.

Honestly, I can't believe that you people are griping about the ACLU. It's because of them that you can say this stuff, bashing them on a debate politics forum. It's because of them that your freedom to practice your religion is still intact.

I do not understand - please elaborate. (honestly)

I thought it was the Declaration of Independence which gave me rights - and the 1st amendment that guarantees it.
 
Yes, and its the citizens who keep it in place.
You've seen Bush's repeated attacks on civil liberties, just imagine what he would've done if there was no ACLU. And then think about every other president too.

The ACLU makes sure the 1st Amendment as well as all other civil rights are upheld.

Actually I think the Constitution technically is the document which gives you your rights. The ACLU fights to preserve them.

The Aclu fights for the rights of people be they religious or non.

The only reason someone could think they are evil is because they block your attempts to infringe on the liberties of others. (Something religious groups tend to want to do a lot of.)

You may not agree with all their view point. No one said you had too.

But you should extend to the same courtesy and respect they give you.

Because if you ever need them to defend your right to practice your religion they will be their for you.

Likewise they'll be there to block any unwanted attempts to force your religion on others.
 

Yes I am saying that you can't discount god because there is no proof that he does not exist. Additionally I think the fact that anything exists at all implies that there is a God. Of course it would probably be helpful to define what we mean by "God." I doubt that he/she/it would exist in a form that would be comprehensible by humans because of lack of further evidence.
I personally tend to think of God as whatever force it is that created the universe.

Of course the evidence that I offer is Dependant on the logic of causality which may not exist before the big bang(Space-time as we know it exists inside of the universe and without time there is no causality.)

You're right on one part, our freedoms are because of the Constitution which definitely pre-dates the ACLU.

Saying that your freedoms exist because of the ACLU is not saying that the freedoms came into existence at the inception of the ACLU.

Can you think of another way that the ACLU might be involved in the existence of your freedoms? Let me help you along. Preservation.

People like you have wanted to destroy the freedoms contained in the Constitution. At times those similar to you have made serious threat to those freedoms, and may have succeeded in chipping away at them. Except they were thwarted, by the ACLU. That is why you hate them. They make it so that you don't get to impose your beliefs on other people, and you don't like that.

I, however, find it very satisfactory. Liberty. Love it.

Comprehensible, Incomprehensible. You can decide whatever you want about god and make it true for you. Its not verifiable, no one can disprove it. You are at liberty to make anything up you want, or accept what other people have made up, and to make up who has the authority to make up things about god.

No one will be able to disprove you. If you find that comforting, I pity you, but I don't begrudge you your freedom.

No one can disprove this, so you are free to choose to believe it. But what if Purple Dragons with Pink Stars a Yellow Polka Dots created the Universe and in so doing destroyed themselves. No one can disprove this either. And you chose to believe that a god created it all. The history of mankind is rich with creation myths. How do you decide, I wonder, which one to believe... since none of them can be disproven.

I choose not to accept most of that set of things that cannot be disproven. The small set of the things that I do accept that cannot be disproven, I accept because they are backed by evidence which can be proven or disproven. One of the things that I do not accept is the existence of God. This makes me an Atheist.

I am an atheist. I personally believe in no GODS. That's it.

My reasons for being an atheist is based on logic, and not faith. Atheism should be a personal choice. And I don't want to try and convert theists, or debate their beliefs. Because you cannot not reason against faith. As faith is not reason. I think that is fairly obvious.

I respect everyone to have their own belief system, because that is what we hold dear in pluralist democratic societies like America or Australia. They only time I will stand up for my beliefs is when someone says that atheists are evil or immoral.

Yes I am an unholy person because I am a non-believer, but I am not an immoral person. There is a distinct difference.

As an atheist I believe myself to be a spiritual person. I do believe in humanity, that we can make a difference in the world. I do believe in loving your neighbour as you love yourself.
