What does Kim Jong-in want?

I am still amazed by all the leftwingers who seem to think that tin pot dictators getting nukes makes them invincible or on par with major military superpowers like the US. Having nukes would make North Korea more likely to be invaded....not less likely. If North Korea does successfully mount a nuclear warhead onto their ICBM,s they will be crude compared to the nuclear arsenel the US has. Just one Trident submarine firing nukes could turn North Korea into a big hole in the ground in a matter of minutes. And chances are, anything NK fires at the US can be destroyed in flight. If it goes to a hot war, we can likely blow them up on the launch pad. And you are quite confused about Grenada. We did not take out Grenada. We liberated them from the Cubans

How about taking out the nukes not destroyed? Got a plan?

Drove for two hours today. I was thinking about this guy, and can't for the life of me figure out what his end game is. What do you suppose he wants?

Is his regime in danger? Does he need to look powerful to his people? I doubt that, since if they didn't like him and expressed that, I'm sure they'd quietly disappear.

He knows he's a paper tiger, right? What do you suppose his motives are?

he is a paranoid skitzo who also happens to be a socio/psychopath
who knows.

He wants to be respected and treated like any other leader in the world and be allowed to trade with all other nations when where and how he wants, rather than being ostracized and kept out of the world of nations and kept under the boot of international sanctions, while being allowed by the rest of the world to continue to maintain his power and stranglehold over the people of his country as a dictator and despot tyrant - be invited to sit with the cool kids at lunch. Since that's not going to happen given his and his family having the blood of his people on their hands, his only viable option is to threaten everyone if they don't give him what he wants - if he can't eat lunch with them, he'll just threaten to beat up the kids (nukes) while he steals the other kids lunch money (gets the sanctions lifted for humanitarian aid - food, medicine, etc.).

What is interesting is that he could have done almost anything domestically, if he had not threatened with WMD. Had he only done the Assad like terror against his population and made nasty sounds other than about delivering nukes against the US it was fine. The Chinese backed him. And there lurks a suspicion. The Chinese have all the reasons to provoke the US, test their mettle and make it look badly red lines and all.

Which hairball are you referring to?

Oh, your correct. He and his father and grandfather have been killing off their own people and terrorizing the population for ~70 years, and no other countries have given a rats ass about it.

and other such actual and real attacks that have ended in deaths, and no one gave a rats ass about that either.

But... you start showing that you can hit US military facilities and civilian populations in a major world economic hub like Japan, or threaten a forward US military base on a US possession and US citizens in Guam, and our political rats will start showing their ass and preparing to give it to the DPRK without hesitation.

Like all dictators he wants to stay in power.

NK is consistent- they always make threats but never carry it out. They know for a fact that if they start a war they will lose. Its as simple as that.

Kim Jong Un is using these missile tests as a distraction game to play his people, and convince them of his strength.

Put yourself in the shoes of NK people. They've been indoctrinated for years by their government to believe they are the leaders in technology and military arms through their media. While we perfected missile defense long ago, they've never seen technological displays like this before, and are being led to believe their country is now a super power.

The game is working pretty well. His people are convinced of his leadership and power, the world is paying attention to him, and the US president is giving them endless soundbites for their media.

It is shorter to say he wants to sit at the adults table.

You are so right we far out class him and that is why we should not fear him. He will never attack us militarily and we need to simmer down about us attacking him. There is no excuse for the millions of lives that would be lost and it would be all our fault. The "sticks and stones" rule applies here. Do we really need to relearn the rules of the playground? Russia and China have many more ICBM's targeted at us today than Kim will ever have. Are we going to attack them?

Regardless it is his country not ours and we cannot play God with the lives of millions. We need to leave him alone and pressure China to reign him in. It is the only sane option. This has always been our policy and there is a good reason for it.

It seems so counter intuitive that the fellow would risk his position.

Where do you get an impression like that from?

I agreed with your post where you basically said the same thing I did. But why do you think I want him to accomplish this?

Maybe I'm wrong but you seem to be against stopping him before he gets even more good cards in his hand.

I think a strategy of preventing some nation from getting nuclear weapons is a great strategy and noble aim and it should be pursued. Regarding North Korea, that page has been turned and the reality is they now have the weapons. That is the reality of it regardless if we or the rest of the world like it or not. They have the weapons and are now developing delivery systems and they can indeed wreak havoc on those around them should they opt to do that if they feel threatened. That is the status quo - that is the current reality.

We cannot prevent North Korea from becoming a nuclear power as that is now a reality.

So what do we do from this point forward? We can attempt to isolate them. We can attempt to deal with them. We can attempt to find allies to do the same. We can impose measures such as sanctions to discourage them. We can reward them for good behavior.

Or we can do a combination of these things or all of these things or more.

Please make no mistake - if North Korea attacks anyone - be it South Korea or Japan or Guam or anyone else including the USA - they will be destroyed by our military and that will be their fate and they will be responsible for their own demise. And please make no mistake that North Korea will take lots of innocents down with them before the last North Korean perishes.

I do think China is the key to all this. North Korea could not exist without China. China sees advantage in having North Korea be what it is and the prevention of a US uniting the Korean peninsula that would threaten China - at least in their own narrow perception.

Somehow , someway, we need to reach an accommodation with China that gives them assurances of their own security on that border at has them rein in Korth Korea at the same time as a reward. There is no alternative to that other than a full blown war.

My guess is that Kim wants the same thing that Aretha Franklin wants, and pretty much what every human being wants, some measure of RESPECT

But we shouldn't let them attack anyone and, you have already admitted that his goal is to build up as much nuclear weapons and missiles as he can in order to extort as much money out of the world as he can. We can't let him build his arsenal up further and we can't pay Lex Luther what he wants.

Let's hope it isn't to die in a blaze of glory.

What would cost more?

war or payoff?

yup its been working out great as he fires missiles towards Japan

It is better than all the alternatives. We have no right to kill millions because of empty rhetoric. He is less likely to attack us than any other of our enemies.

He can't use any of his nuclear weapons any more than we can. The only thing he can "extort" is the survival of his regime. We will not go to war to overthrow him so just chill.

Nukes are not cards they are only deterrents that may never be used. As horrible as his regime is a war in Korea is much worse.

Are you okay? You may want to re-read my post, if that's what you got out of it on your first reading.
