What did you have for dinner? -Part dois

My son wanted to eat a burger on Christmas Eve, so we did... sigh.

I got a bacon cheeseburger, and we got a large side dish, which was a mound of fries and onion rings. We had pies and assorted fruit back in the house, so we didnt stop anywhere else for dessert.
the PERFECT meal
glad your son is teaching you what the good stuff is about
and even more glad you so indulged your son at Christmas!

I can hear the boiler and the zoned circulating pumps shut off for about 4 minutes and then they come back on. The house is over 120 years old (built in 1895) and it has been remodeled and added to twice that I know of and needs a 3rd time. It still has the original slate roof.

I have the 3rd-floor bedrooms shut down (it's like a refrigerator up there now) and the pocket door to the 2nd floor at the top of the steps closed. The basement is the warmest because of the below grade and the grade-level windows were replaced by glass blocks 25 years ago.

The boiler dates from the 1960s and could be replaced with a more efficient until but it works fine. If I did replace it I might go to forced hot air so I can have central AC instead of 2 window units.

The inside temp is 65-68° and I'm wearing jeans and a 3/4 sleeve sweatshirt and am very comfortable.

I'd be careful closing off floors & rooms if there's water pipes up there!

Christmas dinner was the local version of schweinshaxe, which is ham hock normally roasted whole, but in this case, it was deep fried. Salted caramel cheesecake and a assorted fruit for dessert.

This Christmas was rather challenging. The frigid weather storm changed everything. We lost our internet, tv, and home phone. The only devices we had were our cell phones to access local news, stay in contact with loved ones. radio for entertainment the last 4 days. Hubby could not get the DVD player to work so we could not even watch an old movie. The roads were so bad that we were stranded. They were calling for people to be frugal with their energy usage during Christmas Eve and Christmas because they were having difficulty keeping up with the demand and issued a warning that we may have to begin rolling blackouts. They were asking people not to do laundry, and other things that take needed energy to heat homes. We did not even turn on our Christmas lights., The house was pretty much dark. Being able to heat our home during this frigid spell was most important of all. I did not fix our Christmas dinner till Monday when temps started to rise, and our services were restored.

I prepared a small standing rib roast ( 5.5 lbs. ) with au jus, mashed potatoes, asparagus and crusty hard rolls. For dessert a berry bowl and whipped cream. Leftovers tonight and the rest has been sliced and put into freezer bags for another day.

Kind of a late post but...
For Christmas Eve I cooked a 19 lb whole bone in ham.
I'm not by nature a picky person and that is reflected in my dining habits, I will eat most anything.
However, if I am going to cook a ham, there is only one brand of ham I will even consider purchasing....
Fricks Quality Meats...

I found this brand a few years back at my local meat counter. I knew the butcher pretty well as he had done some custom cutting for me.
I asked him what was a good brand of ham, and he told me Fricks. Seems he raises and processes his own hogs and Fricks is what comes closest to what he does for his family.

These hams are very flavorful and do not have a salty taste to them, which is my biggest turn off on hams..

Anyway, check for them at your local grocers, they sell whole, shank, boneless and ham steaks....try a steak and see what you think...great for breakfast...

I have no business dealings with Fricks outside of enjoying their product, just thought others my want to try a good ham.

Eggplant Parmesan. Last night was Imported Danish Cream Havarti and Prosciutto with onion, mayo and Dijon mustard on warmed croissant roll.

Sorry to hear. Take the hint, time to move, life's too short. It was 80 degrees here on Christmas (Los Angeles). We had a ham and I smoked a a turkey. Leftovers tonight.

Happy for you that you had such pleasant weather for Christmas in Los Angeles while pretty much the rest of the country was in a deep freeze. As far as Los Angeles goes for an array of issues would be one of the last places I would choose to live. Home is home. Happy New Year.

Visited the nearby mall to buy something quick, only to find that a new Japanese restaurant just opened up, and is offering all-you-can-eat shrimp tempura for $9 at a limited time only.

Ugh. Can hardly move now. I cant wait for the holidays to be over. All this rich food is making me gain weight.

My parents came over yesterday night, and my wife made a big dinner.

Ham
green beans
stuffing
mashed potatoes
deviled egg
baked mashed sweet potatoes with a candied crust
sugar cookie

It was great.

Tonight will be a lighter dinner. 6" club sub and baked chips with ketchup.
