It was insurrection, by definition.
Was it a poorly executed? Absolutely. Was it a coup attempt? I don't think so, not directly anyway. Trump orchestrated this event to happen at our capitol on that day, specifically. What did he hope to accomplish? Chaos and possibly an opening for him. I think he expected to DELAY the proceedings, because DELAY si Step 2 in his usual method. A DEALY combined with all the uncertainty and distrust he sowed and the fake elector scheme was all a hail mary pass in his hopes to maintain power.
Now that he will have it again, we are in for a rough few years. The cult believes his bullshit, but I wonder for how long? This time there will be no rational excuses for the coming failures. The trumper chaos we are seeing already is only a glimpse of what is to come. I can’t believe Americans were so stupid - again.
Depends on whose definition is used. Days after whatever happened, before we learned the militia groups came armed and stashed weapons around the city, we grabbled with how to define what happened.
Riot? Insurrection? Words matter in describing Capitol siege, David Bauder, Associated Press, 1/14/2021
"At first, viewed from a distance, it was a rally or protest. Then it became an assault, a riot, an insurrection, domestic terrorism or even a coup attempt. The language used by the American media to describe last week’s Capitol siege proves one thing whatever your perspective: Words matter."
For the majority of the participants, I agree with Edward N. Luttwak who wrote
Coup d'État: A Practical Handbook, Revised Edition, 2016.
The Mob on the Hill Was Far From a Coup, Edward N. Luttwak, the Wall Street Journal, 1/7/2021 (Paywall)
"The only description that makes sense is a venting of pent-up resentments."
Those intent on the label "Coup d'État" applied a different definition. Whatever happened that day was a "Self Coup." Neat way to skirt around the crowd's intent. Label it and apply the label universally.
But I think the DOJ and the FBI sorted out the levels of culpability and the courts imposed penalties accordingly. Members of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys were convicted of seditious conspiracy. Many more participants were tried, convicted and sentenced for lesser violations ranging from unauthorized entry to impeding Congress as well as assault.
We'll be at odds over how to describe January 6, 2021 till the rivers run dry.
