The employers are the ones who deserve to be punished, not the people who were tricked. I do not agree with that at all. Legislation should retroactively handle the former while protecting the latter.

Yep, thus we need an eVerify mandate, coupled with changes to the FIT code, allowing the IRS to act as the primary enforcement mechanism.


The idea that foreign nationals who broke the law shouldn’t suffer the consequences for having done so is ridiculous. The ‘job creators’ who were using illegal alien labor will suffer the disruption, those extra training costs and very likely have to offer better compensation (to all workers) in order to attract and retain legal labor.
 
I still disagree, but it's likely a pipe dream either way. Our government has a very poor track record for holding corporations accountable for anything, e.g. 2008 and 2020. I don't see our representatives doing anything that might impact their donors.
 

Yep, the donor class would take a hit with the resulting increased training and labor costs. IMHO, most US workers would benefit and should vote accordingly.

The granting of work visa's doesn't much matter to me whether or not they go to the people already here, or to deport those who came illegally, and then grant increased work visas to new workers.
If we decide to deport all of them, that is fine. As long as we realize that new workers will be needed, immediately and have a plan in place to grant those work visas in a hurry.
 
If I rob a bank, and use the money to build a life here, get married, have kids, go to work etc...

Do I get a stay, from robbing the bank?

Ultimately that is what this comes down to. Do we reward the people who chose the illegal path over others who have chosen the legal one.

My concern earlier is a simple one: If we want economic growth, those workers are needed. We are going to need to increase those that can come legally but I have no problem kicking those who came here illegally, out.
 
Another poor analogy. Robbing a bank does a lot more harm than crossing an imaginary line into our country. You and @ttwtt78640 miss the precedent that has already been set and the way many corporations recruit illegal immigrants. Many didn't come here illegally with the intent to break the law. They were misled, pressured, or given little choice but to accept unstable employment. Illegal workers are the symptom, not the cause of the system’s dysfunction. We should be addressing corporations and their exploitation while reforming our inadequate immigration systems.

How are you defining harm? Say I rob and bank and cause no physical harm. Good analogy then. Both things listed cause economic harm to someone.
Have you talked to any of them?

I employ hundreds, and I can tell you unequivocally, they come here to get paid. They certainly aren't taken advantage of

What they experience varies from company to company and state to state. Some areas are better at following laws and providing better compensation. Some areas absolutely exploit illegal immigrants.

They may not be taken advantage of at your company, but they were still drawn in to our country by the precedent of the past, to "get paid," as you put it. That in itself is part of the problem. The system has encouraged and relied on their labor for decades. Did the people working under you tell you they intended to break the law to "get paid" there?

I've always wondered, if they are exploited here, why do others rush to fill the gaps if they leave?
They come wanting the ability to make more here than they could elsewhere.

That isn't exploitation in any sense of the word.

Did they 'tell me'? They didn't have to. I used to get work visas every year for hundreds of people, and then they stopped wanting them. They didn't want to pay the $350 EA(of the $800, plus attorney's fees. They also didn't like being tied to a single employer as the work visa would be invalid if they left to go elsewhere.
Now they pay a coyote thousands of dollars to get here instead.
