[W:#690]McCarthy falls short in first vote for House speaker

When was the longest it took to elect a speaker of the House?

The current limbo is much shorter than the two months it took in 1855 and 1856.

The record for most rounds of votes, according to the Office of the Historian of the House, is the 34th Congress, when Rep. Nathaniel Prentice Banks of Massachusetts was only elected speaker after 133 rounds and some two months of voting.

Look how much simpler the world was 170 years ago. We are presently on the world stage withb our “trou” dropped around our ankles!

They should do so in exchange for rules and committee concessions. They have votes that Kevin needs. They should be available for a price. The right concessions could be a step toward some bi-partisanship, which could be good for Democrats (keep congress somewhat functional) and Republicans (because right now, they do not look like they know how to govern), not to mention the country.

Kevin should approach them as they are his only path to the speakership. A mere willingness of McCarthy to talk to Democrats will neutralize the 20 MAGA malcontents. It his McCarthy's only move at this point. That said, he doesn't have the balls.

There’s no way politically he can do it because, even if we accept the most rosy idea of the situation, that there’s a stand going on here against the hard line MAGAs…

It’ll only get us back to the Obama days of republican vitriol which is any working with the democrats on anything is treason by a republican.

Very little.......just curious about Marge's motivation.
Time for Qevin to be evicted from the Speaker’s chambers.

… so simple we had a civil war 6 years later.

We don’t have a criminal leading our government like Israel.

If I was a dem I'd be tempted to vote for McCarthy if I could get him to promise on camera that Jim Jordan would not sit on any committees.
MqQarthy is a Liar who can never be trusted!!!

Chip Roy is making a speech for the nomination of Byron Donalds, and he's getting a pretty receptive response.

Donalds is a stand in for Jordan. He’s running this.

This could very easily be another 1st and goal the Democrats find a way to **** up.

I agree - wait for Kevin to cross the House floor on his knees and then wring multiple concessions from him.
If they are getting advice from Nancy I don't think they'll **** it up. I'm sure Nancy has some savvy advice even though she is no longer speaker. The woman has been in politics since JFK for God's sake.

They adjourned until 8PM. My guess is when they return, McCarthy, who hasn't gained a single vote in six votes, will withdraw.

Instead of my normal over-reaction and poor anger management skills, I’ll reserve judgement for now.

I lost Kinzinger and now have LaHood. He’s more of a Breitbart GOP, not moderate like his father.

I’ve supported Rep. Upton all along. He’s great on legislation. I’m not sure a ‘problem-solvers caucus’ GOP can win. Upton is not in the PSC.

And then lie and say he never promised anything on camera.
Have people not been paying attention to the Republicans for the last 6 years?
He wouldn't say he didn't promise anything. He would point to some behavior by a Democrat to justify it.

Or nothing is agreed to and they return for another three votes tomorrow (with the same exact results).

Politics makes for strange bedfellows.

"Howling" in this context is a new term that's entered discourse to describe impotent screams of outrage. Think of that picture of the girl screaming at the sky that conservatives post every opportunity they get.

So, yes, if McCarthy made a promise to Democrats and then broke it (and he would), that would be owning the libs.
