[W:542] Star Harvard business professor stripped of tenure, fired for manipulating data in studies on dishonesty

Pedophilia
Pedophilia is a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children.
Except the overwhelming number of boys were not prepubescent. Here, learn something today.

The point is the process has been extensively tested and found wanting. The point is that a study is no longer deserving of belief merely for having been published for that reason. How much more proof do you need? Do you need more than the skyrocketing rate of retractions?

Alright, that's a worthwhile point to debate - I suppose. I had no idea what the overarching point of all this was supposed to be.

Your source claims 10K papers were retracted in the recent year - apparently a record.

If you don't mind, Google A.I. responded with this below - also a record:

In 2022, the Scopus database recorded 3.3 million research papers published worldwide. This represents a significant increase from 2016 when 1.92 million papers were indexed in Scopus and Web of Science.

However the publishing hosting house 'Publishing Slate' claims 5M total, below:

Here:

(Publishing Slate) How Many Journal Articles Have Been Published?

Given that Scopus is only one publishing/hosting house, I would suggest the actual number is closer to Publishing Slate's.

However I'm fine with working with Scopus's number, since Scopus is an established known entity giving a hard number as to what they've actually published.

--

Crunching the numbers yields a retraction rate of 1 paper in 3,300. 1 in 5,000, by Publishing Slate's numbers.

--

Should numbers like this be a concern? If so, why?

“Giddy”? No need! I do believe that this is showing exactly the issues with many of our higher education institutions. And personally, yes I am glad we are finally seeing it come to light. I am sorry if you struggle with that.

Can you offer your specific opinion on this thread? Harvard and Francesca?

I am getting mixed messages here. Either this thread is just about Harvard and Francesca specifically, or they are just being used to suggest all science and academic institutions should be discredited- and we should all go running after more credible sources claiming cancer causing wind turbines and pet eating Haitians in Ohio instead.

Which is it?

You mean many famous actors, business owners, professors, political activists, middle income workers, and even CEOs...or are you just determined to shit yourself and scream TRUUUUUUUUUMP!!!! in yet another thread that has **** all to do with Trump?
Because the scientist in question is now going to be Trump's lead candidate to run the National Science Foundation, no doubt.

Well you do realize that science is indeed part of the discussion involving Harvard and Francesca? Wind Turbines are not part of this particular discussion but I will say that i am more than willing to engage if you start a thread on that subject. I promise, if you actually start a thread in what you want to discuss I will gladly engage. Let’s do it. ;)

I am not surprised. Anyways…..it appears she finally is a goner. Thankfully.

As it should be.

BTW - If you look at my post directly above, you'll find a little research on my part seemed to find only about 1 in 5,000 published papers get retracted.

That's not just a low number, but quite honestly far lower than I assumed.

So then why, when I say that the real purpose of this thread is to discredit all science and academic institutions, do I get told this is thread is really just about Harvard and Franscesca? Can we agree that the real point here on this thread is far more than that: it is to discredit science in general, so you can then go on to discredit climate change science, and that the Earth is more than 6000 years old, and then have us all chasing down cancer causing wind turbines?

See, it's all really related. You just don't want to admit it. Come on, you like the cancer causing wind turbines and autism causing vaccines much more than climate change science, and the purpose here is to promote one over the other. But you can't do that if science is behind one and not the other. So you have to discredit all science. Therefore Franscesca, and therefore all Harvard, and therefore all science.

That's the line of reasoning right there, isn't it? (See posts #531 and 534 for how it works)

Thats what I'm asking, why are you expecting rationality from MAGA?

I woke up this morning wondering how much this country is going to hell, I pop in to see if the cause has gotten worse, I see threads like this where again MAGA is doing the usual divorced from reality hypocritical announcements, and I see it is getting worse.

The MAGA side just keeps posting these crazy threads, and they can't discuss any basic ideas within the event and they act as if it is emblematic. I say it is just another assault on rationality in a time of lies on a grand scale. You and I have spoken on this, this level of insanity is unprecedented in our history.

FYI - A little research seems to indicate retracting a paper only occurs in approximately 1 in 5,000 papers. A much lower number than I assumed.

Not sure, it seemed like she was tenured at that point,

Tenured at the time of the papers?

If so, what a loss for her on top of her rep.

If I ever fly into her home city, I'll check if she's my Uber!

but these sorts of things have happened before. It could be tied with competition to get grants or funding, if she had more publications that were higher profile, she might have thought she would have a better chance at getting more funding. In grad school, we were always told the story of Schön who worked back in the days of Bell Labs and faked data. You see it pop up from time to time, a lot of it (at least in physics) tends to be found out quickly because the research is either in a developing field or others try to reproduce the work.

Yep. Plausible reasons. And yeah, who could forget Schon. BTW - My Bell Labs heroes were Kernighan & Ritchie!

FWIW - A little research seems to indicate only 1 in 5,000 papers get retracted. Far fewer than I imagined. I posted links in a recent post upthread.

It’s not just one. There is a significant amount of fraud and incompetence in the behavioral sciences.

I assume you have proof for that claim?

A renowned Harvard University professor was stripped of her tenure and fired after an investigation found she fabricated data on multiple studies focused on dishonesty.

Francesca Gino, a celebrated behavioral scientist at Harvard Business School, was let go after the school’s top governing board determined she tweaked observations in four studies so that their findings boosted her hypotheses, GHB reported.

Harvard administrators notified business faculty that Gino was out of a job in a closed-door meeting this past week, the outlet reported.

We are supposed to trust the "experts" right? It reminded me of this:

So because one accountant embezzles money, they all do?

I do believe that this is showing exactly the issues with many of our higher education institutions.
The only thing this shows is that people from every class, ethnicity, gender and social standing are capable of doing stupid shite.
What's amusing is how you somehow see this as a "gotcha" moment, proving (in your mind) that donalds justified in his immature and illegal attacks on anything and anyone whom he sees as a threat to his "power".

If Illegal actions by an emotionally immature and vindictive Alzheimers patient float your boat, have at it.
This World's full of nonsense.
Have a belly laugh.
Its all you're worth.

Moderator's Warning:
I'm not sure why some people have to turn every thread into a Trump bashing festival, but the topic of this thread has absolutely nothing to do with Trump. Stick to the topic or else.

Actually what it shows is that we have Professors whom should not actually be teaching our young adults. I don’t believe this is just a “gotcha”moment, I believe this show a major issue with higher education. She got away with this for years.
“Illegal actions by an emotionally immature and vindictive Alzheimer’s patient”? Whom are you referring to? The more I read your response the more I realize you NEVER read the actual article. This issue was in place years ago. Did you seriously not realize that? It just goes to show your absolutely support of a movement not at all interested in the truth. And honesty….you look VERY foolish with your comments. I so look forward to your response. Good luck

Thank you.

We have folks in every walk of life that shouldn't be doing what they're doing.
What gives you the idea that institutes of higher learning ( particularly Harvard) have an over abundance of such people?

So, with that logic, if there is one doctor that is incompetent, doctors should not be treating sick people, and if there’s one incompetent engineer, we should not be having engineers designing our bridges?

We should look to Fox News instead for how to do those things. Right?

So some were and some weren't
Your statement was false
