[W: #513] President Trump Announces 25 Percent Tariff on all Mexican and Canadian Imports, Effective January 20th – Until Border is Secure

Will that 25% tariff include the 4,400,000 barrels of oil we import from Canada and Mexico daily?
It appears the answer is yes.

The question is this: Will the importers continue to get oil from Canada and Mexico...or will they find other sources?

Tariffs on our neighbors to the north and to the south will hurt them. They start helping US to keep those without permission out of the United States, and President Trump will release the tariffs. We currently are the biggest importer of their goods, and a 25% tariff on their goods hurts them. Tariffs equals leverage for us. Ball's in their court now

"Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border illegally."
"Mexico and Canada are the United States' largest trading partners. More than 83% of exports from Mexico went to the U.S. in 2023 and 75% of Canadian exports go to the country."

Lol.

American consumers will only pay if they buy the more expensive stuff. Nobody is forcing them to buy the stuff.

If they don't buy the stuff, then Mexico and Canada will be the ones who suffer.

The question is this: Will Mexico and Canada risk suffering...or will they do what Trump demands? The choice is theirs.
More expensive stuff? Will fruit and vegetables be exempt? Car parts?

It's an interesting question because he may just exempt certain things, but the reality is crude producers in both countries are far more dependent on US refineries than the US is on their crude.

Canadian crude producers really wouldn't have much choice but to cut prices to be sure their crude had an outlet.

Mexico's state owned refining system is a disaster and they are heavily reliant on US refiners to manage their more complex crudes, and import far more refined products than they export crude. Given Pemex is almost always teetering on the brink of insolvency I imagine this would get their attention pretty quickly.

There is another caravan of illegal aliens approaching the U.S. southern border through Mexico. President-elect Donald Trump wants the Mexican government to stop this nonsense immediately.
To put teeth into his demand, President Trump has announced a 25% tariff on all imported goods from Mexico and Canada until they secure their side of the border and stop illegal aliens from getting here.

So...there you have it. The hammer is raised and is poised to fall. It's now up to Mexico and Canada to act to avoid getting hit.
So Trump is violating the free trade agreement we have with Mexico and Canada? He is going to start his term as a whelcher? You do know that it will cause the layoffs of 10's of 1000's of Americans because most of what comes from Mexico is by American companies. What does he want? Canada to build a wall?

Looks like you don't understand. Nobody is forcing you to buy Mexico's or Canada's goods.

Buy American!

Suddenly inflation and the price of goods doesn’t matter at all. 😂

At least now we see how MAGAs will simply shrug off the increased costs they pay in fealty and allegiance to Dear Leader.

“Thank you sir, may I have MORE tariffs please”

😂

Most of the stuff we import from Canada and Mexico, American companies can't just pivot on a dime and find elsewhere. You can't just make spare parts factories for cars appear over night.

So yes, Americans are going to suffer. Because of Trump.

Or you know, like those fresh fruits and vegetables IN JANUARY

Mexico will send their oil elsewhere for a 10% discount on world prices.

What is there are no American tomatoes in January? Most of Mexico's exports are for American companies too. I hope Trump's economy hits your family the hardest. You richly deserve it for carrying his water.

Most cochise comes to Canada through the US, most illegal guns in Canada come from the US

The US better secure their border

Not sure how this will decrease the trafficking of drugs from other countries. Are they going to tax the drugs?

Yeah, the local dealer is going to mail the check in to the IRS in April

How will tariffs on both Mexico and Canada benefit The United States?

Imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada can have many benefits for the United States

  1. Protecting Domestic Industries: Tariffs can help protect U.S. industries from foreign competition by making imported goods more expensive. This can encourage consumers to buy domestically produced goods, potentially boosting local businesses and jobs.
  2. Generating Revenue: Tariffs can be a source of revenue for the government. The money collected from tariffs can be used to fund public services or reduce the national debt
  3. Leveraging Trade Negotiations: Tariffs can be used as a tool in trade negotiations. By imposing tariffs, the U.S. can pressure Mexico and Canada to make concessions or changes in trade policies that are more favorable to U.S. interests.
  4. Addressing Trade Imbalances: Tariffs can help address trade imbalances by reducing the volume of imports. This can help reduce the trade deficit, which is the difference between the value of a country's imports and its exports
  5. National Security: In some cases, tariffs can be used to protect industries that are critical to national security. By ensuring that these industries remain viable, the U.S. can maintain its ability to produce essential goods domestically.
