Some Problems Reported As Voters Head To Polls « CBS Pittsburgh

CLINTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Today is Election Day and for the most part, voting has been smooth.

Many areas are already seeing long lines with some officials saying they wouldn’t be surprised if voter turnout topped 80 percent. However, there have been some scattered issues where voters are encountering problems.

Election judges in Clinton Township, Butler County confirmed there were issues with two of their eight automated voting machines. Most of the issues came when people tried to vote straight party ticket. However, other said they specifically wanted to vote for Republican Donald Trump only to see their vote switched before their eyes to Democrat Hillary Clinton.

“I went back, pressed Trump again. Three times I did this, so then I called one of the women that were working the polls over. And she said you must be doing it wrong. She did it three times and it defaulted to Hillary every time,” Bobbie Lee Hawranko said.

“If somebody has an issue, they should certainly let the judge of elections at the precinct know and also call their county bureau of elections as folks have done here this morning,” Pa. Rep. Daryl Metcalfe said.

Officials have recalibrated the machines and are confident that the problem has been resolved.

Allegheny County has also been dealing with some Election Day issues. A judge of elections did not show up when the polls opened this morning in Springdale Borough.

When Margaret Vernon, more than three hours after the polls opened, sheriff’s deputies escorted her into the facility. She will be charged by summons with failure to perform duties.

Vernon told deputies she was ill.

How is it possible for a "glitch" in an electronic voting machine to automatically switch a vote to Hillary? What are the odds?

Really?

Really?

Odds are it is has been programmed to do just that. I just voted and was able to choose paper or touch screen, I took paper. From what I saw everyone chose paper.

I get that a machine can have issues. Even an electronic one.

What are the odds that issue just happens to manifest itself as an automatic default to a Hillary Clinton vote?

I'm left absolutely stunned. The odds are too colossal to consider, and the ramifications too extreme to wrap my head around.

That sounds like a perfectly normal glitch, if the machine is set to switch automatically. it's what you'd expect to happen.

It's the honest Clinton machine.

Go back to paper ballots that have to be hand written.

Virginia is doing this.

Some might challenge that in court as being racist.

My problem was that in VA it was a scanned paper ballot that didn't display the results of your scanned ballot when you ran it through the machine. I would like the screen to show me that it read my ballot correctly.

Well sure. If it's set to switch votes automatically, it would be functioning as designed. I'm sure this programed "glitch" is functioning perfectly.

If it's a touch screen, it's a matter of properly calibrating the "touch" to the right point on the screen. So while you touch "A", the PC thinks you touched "B". This kind of thing is why I'm a big fan of paper ballots and optical readers. Having a rock solid paper trail combined with a very solid technology for counting them quickly is the ideal method IMO.

It's shocking to me that it wouldn't already do that.

I'm not familiar with these machines, so I will have to take your word for it.

It seems to me such a sensitivity should make that type of machine unsuitable for use.

I completely agree with you on the issue of a paper ballot. The whole world of computing once was run by punch card, so certainly millions of paper ballots could be handled without introducing this flaw into the process.

It's Clinton Township. The folk up that way are not known for their tech skills.

It's shocking to me that it wouldn't already do that.

It already had a video screen that reported the success or failure of the scan... but wouldn't tell me HOW it read the vote. This is the standard system used across the state of Virginia.

I never vote straight party. I also check my vote after I punch the ballot or push the button. I've been voting for decades using various systems. Never had a problem.

Likely not some big conspiracy, just the reality of the nature with touch screens. Especially the likely resistive ones that I imagine many voting machines are to save money. This seems to come up every year.

This is why I"m gneerally a bigger fan of paper ballots though. "Glitches" with computer ballots more often give the apperance of something problematic on the part of the polling place. Human Error filling in ballots is more clearly on the individual doing the ballot and causes less uncertainty in the system imho.

This particular error has been documented,

Since the press release was on 10/24, one would have to wonder why the problem is still happening on 11/8.

I'd say the odds of 2 machines out of 100s of thousands have a glitch aren't all that "colossal" at all. If this was intentional hacking, it would be evident across the region - two machines isn't going to help Hillary. Besides, if there was a hacked machine, it would be easier and make a lot more sense to just manipulate the count, instead of have it flip on the screen itself. We know kids can do the programming to let someone vote for Hillary and have it count behind the scenes for Trump.

These stories happen every year. Sometimes it's stories of votes being flipped to the republican, other times to the democrat. I don't think it means anything other than voting on paper is always what makes the most sense - should be mandatory paper, even if those are counted by machine. I vote electronically and I've always considered my vote "suggestions" since I can't see what the machine does with that count.

Really?

What are the odds that to support his claim of election rigging, Trump's campaign programmed the machine to do it right in front of a voters eyes...

Because i can tell you, its not hard to make a screen say one thing and tally it another. And anyone capable of hacking a voting machine can pull it off, promise you that. This benefits Trump more than a few thousand votes for Hillary hurt him, because it will add legitimacy to his lawsuit. And as the most litigious man in the history of the world, I bet he knows that.
