“ A towering statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, is expected to be taken down on Wednesday as a symbol of racial injustice, more than 130 years after it was erected in tribute to the South’s Civil War leader.

While many other Confederate symbols across the South have been removed without public announcements beforehand to avoid unruly crowds, Gov. Ralph Northam’s office is expecting a multitude and plans to livestream the event on social media.

Northam announced plans to take down the statue in June 2020, 10 days after George Floyd died under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, sparking nationwide protests against police brutality and racism. The plans were stalled for more than a year by two lawsuits filed by residents opposed to its removal, but rulings last week by the Supreme Court of Virginia cleared the way for the work to proceed.

Patrick McSweeney, an attorney for the plaintiffs in one of the lawsuits, said Tuesday he had notified the high court that he will ask for a rehearing, but such requests are rarely granted. From 2016 through 2020, the court granted rehearings in just two of the 86 requests it received, said L. Steven Emmert, an appellate attorney who publishes a website focusing on appellate rulings in Virginia.”

About time. There was no reason to celebrate a regime which went to war to protect slavery in the first place. The Confederate cause was deeply evil from the start, and it’s successors instituted a century of tyranny even after its fall. The only Confederates who really deserve to be acknowledged are men like James Longstreet and William Mahone who came to acknowledge the evil of that cause and did everything in their power to make amends.

Good. Should have happened a long time ago

General Lee, I have read, was a scholar and a gentleman.

This would be a nicer country (and less violent one) if more young men emulated General Lee's behavior.

Of course, the statue had to come down because of the current political climate.

Too bad the opponents of the statue lacked the self-confidence to let the statue stand for historical reasons.

And because it lent a certain graciousness to Richmond.

Awesome! This is correcting history.

General Lee waged war against the United States to try and protect slavery.

The statue had to come down because it is the right thing to do.

How do you figure?

Owning other people as property?

Leading a treasonous rebellion that resulted in the deaths of nearly a million people, all essentially in the name of preserving the right of certain people to own certain other people as property?

"The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence."

Not sure what a scholar and gentleman offsets a traitor to the Republic.

Pretty sure young men and women are emulating Gen. Lee's behavior. Rebelling against a lawful election and being quite violent. Of course that statue went up 30 some years after the failed rebellion during a backlash political climate. Too bad opponents to the removal lack the self confidence to let the past be passed for accurate historical reasons. Any statue honoring a historical figure lends a certain graciousness to Richmond. Not so graceful, but strikingly historic, would be a monument showing slaves families being separated and auctioned off in front of Virginia's scholars and gentlemen... ✌️

Someone watched PragerU…killing a radical abolitionist was one of the good things he did? 🤨

Bye bye, Robert E Lee.

I don't disagree with the taking down off statues of Individuals associated with slavery but I think it should be done across the board. It is known that certain individuals in the north also owned slaves so I'm just saying if society is going to take down statues and shun anybody who was in support of slavery or owned slaves back in the day it needs to be done across the board.

Meh, many of them were not traitors.

That you would praise a Confederate general comes as no surprise.

Racists love them some Robert E Less. We know.

Bronze is about 90% copper and can be melted down and sold for a good price. What should we do with the money?

These statues are essentially pieces of artwork with couple of paragraphs of propaganda at their base as an ode to a historical figure. The political process has determined that this piece of art and those paragraphs, sitting on public land should be removed. Its okay for one generation to like it sitting there, and another generation not to like it there. They get to change their minds for whatever reason suits them.
