When Gov. Glenn Youngkin rolled out his energy plan in October, stating that Virginia must be “all in” on nuclear energy and that he wants to deploy a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) somewhere in Southwest Virginia within 10 years, Dominion Energy, the state’s largest utility company, was already one step ahead of the game.

“In our own planning process, we have already been evaluating various technologies and sites across the commonwealth, and we envision that we could be in a position to place the first SMR in service within the decade,” Todd Flowers, Dominion’s director of business development, said in an interview with Cardinal News on Tuesday.

It's about time somebody started the ball rolling.

My region in VA is already mostly powered by nuclear power from the North Anna Nuclear power plant - about 75% last I checked. Hopefully Dominion can show that the SMR technology is economically viable.

Those should react well when tRumplings start shooting at them.

Quote from the article:

But Flowers said SMR technology is considered safe, has no negative environmental impact ...

That's obviously a lie.

The electrical infrastructure can be damaged as we've seen recently but the reactor itself is simply not subject to the aggressions of random rednecks with small arms.

Rolls Royce have been in talks to build a bunch of these in the UK for years now.

It seems I suck at the internet and I can't work out how to post links.
Everything just ends in a broken mess, sory about that.

Weird how Lake Anna Reactor is in the middle of Trump country and nobody is shooting at it, eh?
And so you are saying they know who shot the stations in NC, and it was a Trump supporter knocking out power in a state and a county where Trump got the most votes?

Sherlock Holmes you ain't....

I'm all for new nuclear and the UK is already building the most expensive nuclear power station in history and have just given the green light for the government funding for station number 2.

Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.

Ever since Fukushima I look at nuclear reactors on the seashore and tug at my collar a bit.

I like Heinlein’s nuclear monk idea.

It’s so dangerous the profit motive becomes questionable as a steward.

But the danger is manageable if treated like it is as dangerous as it is.

On the coastline where tidal waves could get it was never really a good idea.

The controls are.

Even that problem is solvable by just elevating the backup generators.

The bottom line is there is no way to 100% guarantee against a disaster. So it is inevitable that disaster will happen.

Well if you can tell me of an energy source that is 100% safe I'm happy to learn about it.

Luckily, the chances of a volcanoe popping up anywhere near the UK are slim to none.
The stations were also designed with the lessons learnt from that disaster in mind so I'd hope they have protection from even the worst disasters that could hit the UK.

The UK is pretty fortunate in not really having super bad weather or other natural disasters on epic scales like the US does.
The last major huricane we had was 2019 and before that was 86 but other than that it's not bad at all really.

Fun fact, statistically nuclear power causes fewer deaths per twh than solar.

How does solar kill people?
The solar farms near me just sit in fields and other than deliberately running into them and knocking yourself out I can't see how they'd be dangerous.

I don't think we'll ever see a massive nuclear plant built again, but the smaller more local reactors are coming.

If these are the reactors I'm thinking of, good on them.

They're well designed, and they are all laid out in exactly the same fashion, so crews can be rotated through them if necessary, without adding risk. Also makes inspection easier.
