The report does not specify that the release of the convicts — understanding they would head to the United States — could be a purposeful geopolitical move specifically intended to impact U.S. national security. Aggressive covert operations does not mean what you think it does. It can mean what you think it does. But it does not have to.

As for why the hell we committed so much asset and and did so much criming in order to arm the Contras in Nicaragua ....I have no frigging idea. I mean its not like Nicaragua has or had anything we really wanted. Trying to support democratic leaders in Nicaragua did not have to roll up into the mess it became. Why did some in the Reagan Administration have such a hair across their ass for Daniel Ortega. I could see why some countries in the region had a hair across their asses for Ortega but why in hell did we get all up into that right up to the ears including Iran arms deals to fund the damned thing, including allying ourselves with drug lord Noriega who we allowed to get out of control while he was sitting right on top of a strategic asset that we did care about!!!!

Virtually nobody amongst this country's citizenry could give a crap about Nicaragua at the time. Possibly having occupied Nicaragua in the early 20th century had something to do with it....some empathy some felt we had for the place???? Maybe.

I suspect less than precise instructions form former Hollywood star Ronald Reagan had something to do with it. Funny how celebrity in the WH is another of those things that rhymes through our recent history.

You have to pick your battles. Venezuela is worth it. Panama was worth it though the operation itself once fully military was a bit sloppy. Nicaragua was not worth anything like the embarrassment we caused for ourselves. Iran-Contra was a mess. US allying with Noriaga to combat Ortega was a mess. Nothing is worth the shit show that strung from the entire Nicaragua mess.

My only rational......we bought into another version of the domino theory. An oldie but goodie that came back to haunt us again compounded by another round of choosing despots based on their ideological leanings......not quite a model for success.

This story states that our intelligence determined that Venezuela was releasing prisoners, sending them to the border (not to America) and that our border agents should be on the lookout for the Venezuelans to make sure they didn't enter.
