LAS VEGAS (AP) — A massive drought-starved reservoir on the Colorado River has become so depleted that Las Vegas now is pumping water from deeper within Lake Mead where other states downstream don’t have access.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority announced this week that its Low Lake Level Pumping Station is operational, and released photos of the uppermost intake visible at 1,050 feet (320 meters) above sea level at the lake behind Hoover Dam.
“While this emphasizes the seriousness of the drought conditions, we have been preparing for this for more than a decade,” said Bronson Mack, water authority spokesman. The low-level intake allows Las Vegas “to maintain access to its primary water supply in Lake Mead, even if water levels continue to decline due to ongoing drought and climate change conditions,” he said.
The move to begin using what had been seen as an in-case-we-need-it hedge against taps running dry comes as water managers in several states that rely on the Colorado River take new steps to conserve water amid what has become perpetual drought.
“We don’t have enough water supplies right now to meet normal demand. The water is not there,” Metropolitan Water District of Southern California spokesperson Rebecca Kimitch said this week. The agency told some 6 million people in sprawling Los Angeles, Ventura and San Bernardino counties to cut their outdoor watering to one day a week, effective June 1, or face stiff fines.
The surface level of another massive Colorado River reservoir, Lake Powell, dipped below a critical threshold in March — raising concerns about whether Glen Canyon Dam can continue generating power for some 5 million customers across the U.S. West.
I woudn't camp overnight someplace where there's no fresh water but since air coditioning was perfected millions of people move to the desert. Just gotta have those golf courses, right?
I blame air conditioning.I blame Sinatra.

Sucks to live south of the border where the Colorado River used to flow, too.
Three things are wrong:
1. Grass. Lawns, golf courses, etc.
2. Ranchers and farmers have to use their water quota or lose it, so they dump water at the end of the year. They just run it right into the dirt.
3. Effluent isn't being used properly.
I recently read of the water used by golf courses in the Coachella Valley of California (Palm Springs, Cathedral City, etc,), and the amounts can be staggering depending on the course, and what they use or don’t use to lessen water consumption.Just gotta have those golf courses, right?

There are plans to redesign some courses where the amount of actual greens are greatly reduced, and the rough expanded to fill the space. Better than no course at all, I guess — not that I’m a golfer.
Like trying to live in Fl. The everyday fight to keep what makes life livable there is an insult to nature. Add the HOAs that mandate such, and what should be living there without having an impact, could possibly have a chance.I woudn't camp overnight someplace where there's no fresh water but since air coditioning was perfected millions of people move to the desert. They just follow the cult like dogma.NV is a desert state and it experiences periodic drought. Who knew? Not the climate nuts, of course.
Lake Mead gets very little of its water from Nevada. Most of it comes from the mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. Who knew?? Oh, that's right... educated people who understand climate science. Unlike global warming denialists like PoS who frequently prove that they have no clue what they are talking about.NV is a desert state and it experiences periodic drought. Who knew? The % of water use that goes to golf courses in Nevada is not easy to find whether by accident or design. However, reading about water consumption it would appear that it is included in public water supply which means anything that comes from the city's water purification plant. In Nevada, agricultural irrigation uses 4 times more water than public water uses. It is used mostly to grow alfalfa a crop that used to be a cash crop for farmers from many different states with no irrigation, but, is now grown almost exclusively in western states with heavily subsidized irrigation. There is a direct connection between industrial corporate farms and the demise of smaller family farms and regional crops. It is an unintended consequence of subsidized water in the west.Just gotta have those golf courses, right?Vegas water intake now visible at drought-stricken Lake Mead

Correction/addendum: " There is a direct connection between industrial corporate farms and the demise of smaller family farms and regional crops. LOL wrong again. Lake Mead is artificial and was formed from the run off of the Hoover Dam. What happens when you place a lake in a desert? It dries up. This basic fact escapes climate cultists since they lack common sense. Well done, Buzz.Lake Mead gets very little of its water from Nevada. Most of it comes from the mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. Who knew?? Oh, that's right... educated people who understand climate science. Nope!! You are wrong again. Lake mead doesn't get its water from the runoff of the Hoover damn. That is just stupid. The Hoover Dam is what created the lake. And just because the lake is in the desert doesn't mean that it will dry up. If that was true then why hasn't this been the case the whole time since the lake was made? The fact of the matter is that the lake levels are decreasing because of drought in the mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah and not because it is located in a desert.LOL wrong again. Lake Mead is artificial and was formed from the run off of the Hoover Dam. What happens when you place a lake in a desert? It dries up. I'm just gonna suggest you look at a map.NV is a desert state and it experiences periodic drought. Who knew? Not the climate nuts, of course.

Strangely enough swimming pools use less water than the same area of grass would use. Amazing what factoids come up when reading up on water consumption. And swimming pools
Oregon already has a fight going between the Klamath Indians who control the water and the farmers who think the state should take control away from the Indians and give it to them. The argument being that farmers know how to use the water to make money.Who wants to be the governor of California, Oregon, or Washington when they declare that farmers are bound by extreme water conservation efforts?
You think the fight over masking and vaccines was bad? Sheeeeiiit.
LOL thats exactly what I said. Now youre just weasling out again.Nope!! You are wrong again. Lake mead doesn't get its water from the runoff of the Hoover damn. That is just stupid. The Hoover Dam is what created the lake.
It will eventually happen during a drought, which is what its doing now- droughts happen in deserts a lot. Why do you think there's news reports about water levels going down?If that was true then why hasn't this been the case the whole time since the lake was made?
