We don’t need the land for strategic purposes and it is simply cheaper to buy the minerals from them.

The US doesn’t need to expand into owning Greenland.

Even your own example shows that the locals would violently resist American attempts to annex them.

They aren’t willing to join the U.S, so yes, it would require war.
