"So this happened today in class, a girl had her feet up and the professor called the police after calling our class uncivil."
... SAN ANTONIO -- The University of Texas at San Antonio is investigating a video showing San Antonio officers escorting a student out of a classroom after a professor allegedly called them on her for having her feet propped up on a chair.

Twitter user @ApurvaYRawal posted a video of the incident Monday afternoon.

He went on to say that Biology professor Anita Moss had called officers to escort her out for having her feet propped up on a seat in front of her.
"The class before this professor went on a whole tirade about how uncivil we all were because a few students were on their phone or not paying attention, cutting lecture time for the rest of us because her ego was bruised. As upset as I am that my professor decided to throw a temper tantrum the lecture before an exam and cancel class, I'm even more outraged that she would decide to single out and humiliate a student just to flex her authority in a destructive manner. ..."

ok, in the grand scheme of things, this is a VERY minor incident

however, it is one which displays how the same incident can be seen differently depending upon the viewers political perspective

if you read the first link, in the comments you will see reference to the professor having sought to have the 'offending' student become seated in a more appropriate manner. it would appear that she declined the instruction and the professor sought security's assistance in removing that student from the classroom:

the prof wasn’t asking her to do something illegal or scandalous or mischievous, she wasn’t asking the student to bend over backwards and do something absurd. it seems like she was asking for respect in her lecture hall and idk why it was so hard to just give it to avoid this

in reading the second link, there is nothing that tells us professor moss had communicated to the 'offending' student the need to become seated without her shoes on the seat in front of her. it would seem that the security team was requested only because professor moss wanted to treat a black student in a racially disparate manner

when reading the comments in that link, they indicated a universal opposition to the professor's actions and tributed her actions to have been either/and racially motivated or an abuse of authority

given the limited information now available, to me, this appears to be an instance where the professor established an expectation of behavior the student was unwilling to accept. when the student opted not to comply with the professor's instructions security was called to remove the insubordinate student from the professor's classroom

i do also note that the UTSA president has already referenced this as a racial incident, describing the student not as a student but as an african American and made reference to the university's Equal Opportunity office:
"Dear Roadrunners,
Today we had an incident where one of our African American students was escorted from a biology class by members of UTSA’s police department at the request of a faculty member.
While the facts aren’t fully known regarding today’s incident, our Office of Equal Opportunity Services is already conducting an investigation into possible discrimination. In addition, an inquiry regarding the academic management of the classroom is being conducted by Interim Dean of the College of Sciences Howard Grimes.
while the incident did involve an african American student, there is nothing which indicates the professor's actions were racially motivated, so why identify the student as a minority and have the Equal Opportunity office investigate

i hope to follow this matter is it is continued to be reported

if you have any thoughts about this incident, please share them

I didn’t imagine the student as being black until the end of the post when it was pointed out, but it doesn’t change my view. It seems there were better ways to handle this than calling the cops. Just dock her grade for not following instructions, for example.

These snowflakes would never hack it in Physics graduate school. Upset because a teacher yelled at them? I had a professor yell at us for almost an entire class because no one remembered the spin of a graviton. Holy **** did she rant. Though she never did call the police on us, she didn't need to. This 5' 3", probably not even 100 lbs, elderly Chinese professor could devour the soul of every student in the class within a Rabi Flop. lol

Calling the cops was unnecessary, but if the kid was refusing the professors request to sit (if such a request was made) then by all means leave the classroom. If you're not going to respect the professor or her lectures, GTFO.

the following is nothing more than my own speculation

from the cites, there was reference to professor moss becoming enraged at the behavior in the previous class. as i recall some students were on cell phones being disruptive to other students in the final lecture before exams

moss may have decided that she was no longer going to 'ask' but 'insist' on acceptable behavior from her students ... and the security intervention was the result of a student's non-compliance

and then there is the possibility that moss is a blatant racist who used this opportunity to zing a black student she did not like

And the professor would still be investigated for the same charge.

Face it, no matter what a white person does to a person of color they are doing it for racist reasons.

Only among unreasonable people. And I don’t much care what unreasonable people think.

Oh the student was black. Well I can totally understand why the cops would waste time and money rushing to the school to arrest her. Is the student still alive or was she shot dead by the cops?

Would she have called the cops if the disrespectful student was WHITE?

Hadn't you noticed? This country is FULL of unreasonable people now a days.

Even just one decade ago this never would have even been considered "news worthy", much less reported on or considered racist.

i don't know
wonder if she has a history of treating minority students in a disparate manner
if not, probably "no"

i believe the security team would respond to any such instance when called by the professor
not just when the involved students were members of a minority group

When I was a kid, a student would have been removed from the classroom for putting his feet on the desk. When I was in college, none of us would have considered doing so, let alone have done so. It was just a matter of respect.

I clearly remember the fear one professor struck into the hearts of me and my fellow students in one particular college subject. If she caught you flatfooted and unprepared, you were LAID OUT, verbally, of course. Female, about 5'3' as well.
Good times;)

I think they'd better have hard evidence of a history and pattern of racism and unequal treatment, because I'm tired of the thought police implying that everything a white person does is motivated by skin color.

oh, please

Perhaps you were raised in a barn or otherwise have no "home training" and thus weren't by your parents and teachers told and required to "keep your feet off the table." Perhaps you don't recall or weren't around in the days when there was strict discipline, including corporal punishment, in classrooms. I really can't say specifically, but I can say your cavalier response suggests a material-enough measure of lumpen guidance shaped your character.

Having had a bout with ADD in school, I would continually lean back in my chair , getting in trouble on a regular basis. I suppose that too was a lack of respect albeit an unconscious. one.

She sounds young and rebellious.
