No empire, republic, dictatorship, etc is extinction proof. I think we tend to regard nations and states as forever affairs because people live such brief lives compared to them. The European nations seem to be the best example I can think of for your idea. For so long they lived as States devoted to each others destruction. When war got to be the affair it became in the early 20th century their ideas evolved towards mutual economic benefits. Even that can't seem to hold them together in the face of nationalism. All it takes in a few short years of American nationalism in charge and it seems that the European interest may be to ally against us. Middling States Like Syria or Turkey seem to be forced to pick the closest enemy to the gates at the moment. It is all very fluid.

Maybe it is time for a shake up. It feels like we are Thelma and Louising our way to the cliff right now anyways.

I think good leadership does one of two things in a situation like this. 1) They begin to realize we might have two distinct nations and find a way to bind them so tightly financially that they can be separately run but economically tied. IE EU. Will it work or not who knows? 2)Go full Hitler and Sumter and fire the first shot. Will it work or not who knows? One thing for sure is people should let their leaders know what they are thinking and feeling and be able to be heard. Has American leadership managed to polarize and isolate so well they can't hear? Who knows, but I guarantee you, Citizens United was one of the best arrows the people allowed to fall in their quiver.
