US shoots down ‘high-altitude object’ over Alaska, White House says

It doesn't mention the object was moving at high speed. They said it was floating at the whim of the wind. Sounds like a balloon to me.
It does.

Commercial flights are at around 36,000 feet, can go up to 42,000. Military is a bit higher.
Thanks, I was about to post that. The reasonable concern was a flight could accidentally run into it. Commercial flight altitudes are assigned by direction between 33000 and up to 42000 feet.

And flights transiting near the north pole are usually up there at the maximum altitude. It was a legitimate safety concern.

"Biden is such an inattentive trigger-happy POTUS. He shouldn't have shot down that balloon over Alaska. It was irresponsible. He should be impeached. "

Boy ya'll are lit tonight...stop making me laugh so much.....I really, really need this laptop and my juice is flying everytime I read something.

Glad this wasn't a civilian jet filled with people like in Iran...

Lol, the CCP is setting us up......."USA, the balloon shooting down champion of the world"......laughing stock of the world, under this current regime.
You always make up such bizarre cult fantasies.

If it were and did not have an authorization, it would be self-defense to shoot it down. Especially, if they don't respond to calls to turn around.
Yes... Iran was very afraid of the airliner that took off from an airport in Iran....

um, he has more detentions than Trump ever did...that shows our border is far more secure under Biden than under Trump.

yes because we catch 100% of illegals and none of them gets through undetected

uh huh ............. sure

Firstly, an altitude of 40,000 is not normally an altitude where you'll find commercial flights. Or my memory isn't so great. Been out of that business for a long time. In fact, didn't they state that balloon over CONUS was not a threat to commercial air travel because it was at about the same altitude? I think they need new writers at that organization.

Secondly, what the heck does that "reasonable threat" mean? A bloody threat is a threat, or so I thought. What's an 'unreasonable threat'?

And now they can collect the pieces much easier off the ice.

EDIT: But I see the thread I thought I would post in was dumped and we already had one and you folks are having questions anew. Some of you are correct that something is a tad odd here. For example, why the heck even tell the public at this early stage?

40K is pretty much in the meat of the Commercial Airspace.

The 1st Balloon was at 63K.

I'm curious as to why shooting baloons not only requires a presidential order, but that government officials, and reporting, have to keep telling us that. Thress times in this story. Is he trying to appear decisive? It seems like there should be some lower point in the chain of command they could handle these issues.
