US ready to bail out Milei’s Argentina, says White House

America stands ready to bail out Javier Milei’s Argentina, the White House has said.

Following a bout of severe market volatility in Argentina, Scott Bessent, the US treasury secretary, said “all options are on the table” to support the country.

The offer of an economic lifeline comes after Mr Milei, the Argentine president and ally of Donald Trump, has spent $1.1bn (£820m) of the country’s $20bn reserves to prop up the peso.
Mr Bessent and the US president will meet Mr Milei in New York on Tuesday as they seek to ease fears over the plunging peso and prevent Argentina from tipping into a debt-repayment meltdown.

This will prove crucial to maintaining the Argentine president’s reform agenda, boosting markets and averting a political crisis.

To the surprise of no one economically literate/paying attention Milei's ultra-libertarian experiment in Argentina has been a complete failure; as its economy and the peso enter free fall and a potential death spiral under his failed leadership, only a humiliating bailout complements of his simpering relationship with Trump offers a way out.

Argentina is what you meant.

This tracks with the “America First” ideology.

i see you edited.

Ye, sorry, autocomplete being a PITA as per usual; no idea how it got 'Venezuela' from the context; probably a typo it ran with.

There are only two kinds of Big-L Libertarians: the very very rich who are actually poised to benefit from government creating a power vacuum by retreating, and morons in love with the idea that they are higher-minded and principled than are 'both parties' (which they insist are the same even though they demonstrably are not).

Elon is buddies with Milei. He should just buy Argentina.

One of our libertarians will soon be along to explain why libertarianism continues to survive against all rhyme or reason as an ideology.

Let's send them Madonna and all her money.

It's the least we can do after this movie.

We don't have any "libertarian" here despite the claim. Everyone of them besides probably aocisonedumho are just Trumpers trying to label themselves libertarian.

Both ideologies are exceedingly stupid and harmful in their own ways.

But Milei is a populist strongman and assiduous Trump ass-kisser, so Trump's happy to shell out American tax dollars.

I thought he liked winners, but evidently losers are fine too; so long as they simper between his ass cheeks.

Nope, your idol is going to waste billions of taxpayer money to save another country all while ignoring Americans.
MAGA = Make Argentina Great Again
Possibly. On the other hand, Argentina has vast mineral resources, and we haven't seen the fine print yet.

On one hand, Milei has a mandate to screw the Argentinian people into the ground. But Trump has a mandate to screw the American people into the ground. Will he give Argentina a bailout that violates Milei's mandate? It will take some doing for the two of them to wangle a deal that makes sure all the minerals end up in the hands of some multinational for a song, while ensuring that the bailout comes from the American taxpayer, and doesn't lead to improved conditions for any ordinary Argentinian. That's the kind of problem cutting-edge AI is being built to find solutions for.

Americans are paying high coffee prices because Brazil pissed off Trump by daring to protect their country from a takeover by Trump's buddy and fellow wannabe dictator.

At the same time, our treasury is out $20 billion because the clueless Argentinian dictator wannabe currently in power has employed a predictably disastrous economic policy.

Trump and friends are making the world a poorer place for all but the insiders, whose loot grows by the day.

Look here, Senile Chuck Grassley is somehow upset over this.
Tough shit, old fart, you wanted this

Also, climate change.

Coffee drinkers are finally finding out climate change is real.

Bail them out with what, the bootstraps of freedom?
