US posts over 68K new virus cases, setting record for third straight day | TheHill

The U.S. on Friday reported more than 68,000 new COVID-19 cases, breaking the country's record for the daily number of new cases for the third consecutive day as the growing pandemic tightens its grip on the country.

Friday's total was a significant rise from Thursday's record mark of 59,886, according to a tally from The New York Times, though it also underscores the massive jump in new cases over the past two weeks. Friday's record of 68,100 represents an 84 percent increase over the last 16 days, the Times found.

Several states set records for the number of new cases on Friday, including Georgia, Utah, Montana, North Carolina, Iowa and Ohio.

This pandemic would make a good plot line for a horror or SciFi novel.

No, I think it's more akin to "Dumb and Dumber".
:)

On the positive side, we are getting closer to herd immunity.

People should wear masks and be mindful of basic hygiene. However, we shouldn't lockdown the country again. Thankfully the death rate is not as high as it was back in April. People should have the freedom to live their lives at their own risk, if you're terrified of contracting COVID people aren't stopping you from walling up in your home and having no human interactions.

Yup, just a few million more deaths & we'll be ready for that porcine H1N1 influenza pandemic from China to finish the remaining people off.

Try The White Plague, Frank Herbert (1982)

I will but I didn't care for his Dune.

Really? I loved it. But The White Plague is set on modern day Earth with plain old ordinary humans, so you might like it more. Or not. Just a good plague story that popped into my head.

The Stand had more interesting bad guys.

But the Dune film had Sting in it and a young Patrick Stewart who amazingly still managed to look old.

It's got a flying guy in a fat suit, what more do you need?

Tried and failed? Tried and died!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a line.

Stephen King. The Stand. Great book.

I've never read King. Saw The Shining and had to travel home on a dark deserted dirt road to a friend's homestead under construction and I am pretty sure I've never had the heebie jeebs worse. He has the touch, alright.

I've read almost everything that he's published. Some of the books are falling apart. He's a great writer.

You said you doubt there will be a vaccine. If there is no vaccine, then eventually we will need herd immunity. I assume you aren't thinking we should shelter in place for the rest of our lives.

Not enough people dying. Usually those viruses kill off tens of millions of people very quickly and have astronomical mortality rates. Be a boring read, I think. Imagine following a scientist who races agaisnt the clock to find a cure, fighting frantically to stay one step ahead of the killer virus for 6 or 7 years before 3% of the world population is killed. The pacing would be quite difficult to get right.

His short stories are far superior to his novels, in my opinion.

This reminds me of the movie "Gingivitis". It was super boring!

I'd have trouble choosing. I even got my wife into his body of work, which is basically its own universe with the Dark Tower series as its spine. Of course, it's turtles, all the way down.

as long as it's mostly the young and healthy catching it, this is a good thing.

Turtles and Roses.

I'm glad I got into the Dark Tower series after he had finished. I cant imagine having to wait twenty years to finish it.
